Orphan date February 2009 The Yamate Gakusha is an international students dormitory located 10 minutes walk from Takadanobaba Station in Tokyo , Japan . The Yamate Gakusha is unique in that it is the home to at most 16 students at any one time. History The institution was established by American members of the YMCA after the end of World War II . Their hope was that the Yamate Gakusha would enable young men from poor, rural areas of Japan to attend universities located in Tokyo. At the time the Yamate Gakusha was established, the monthly fee was quite low. This was because the greatest obstacle preventing rural citizens of Japan from attending universities in Tokyo was the high cost of housing . Historically, an obachan elderly woman served as dorm cook. However, sometime prior to the 1990s she died and was never succeeded. Although the majority of the members of the dormitory are Japanese, in the past decade students from China , Korea , Indonesia , Papua New Guinea , Singapore , and the United States have cycled through the Yamate Gakusha. The working language of the dormitory is Japanese. The administrators of the Yamate Gakusha attempted to unilaterally shut down the dormitory s operations. However, a hunger strike was launched by the dormitory residents and a shut down was averted. Unreferenced stub auto yes date December 2009 Image Glastonbury Abbey reredorter.jpg thumb Remains of the reredorter at Glastonbury Abbey The reredorter was a communal toilet found in mediaeval monastery monasteries in Western Europe and later also in some New World monasteries. It was normally attached to the south end or the east side of the monk s dormitory on the east of the main cloister with seats arranged on the first floor of the building allowing direct access from the dormitory with waste was usually carried away by a stream, river or Waterway conduit . Sophisticated water engineering was used at C teaux Abbey , Roche Abbey and the Carmelite Desierto de Los Leones in Mexico to both that these rooms remained fresh and that the effluent did not pollute water needed for cooking and washing. The word is composed from dorter and the Middle English prefix rere , coming from Anglo French rere backward, behind, from Latin retro. In some monasteries there were two reredorters, one for the monks and one for the lay brothers . The lay brothers reredorter was most often to the west of the cloister, attached to their dormitory in a similar way to that of the monks.
