File Opal doublet.jpg thumb 250px right Opal Doublet A garnet and glass doublet uses a top portion of natural garnet fused to any color of glass to imitate a Gemstone gem . The color of glass used in the doublet is all that is seen, as the garnet provides no color. If seen in reflected light, a separation line may be seen. A harder garnet makes the stones more durable. In the case of opal doublets, a backing layer of onyx or matrix ironstone gives the more fragile opal layer support and can make the opal look darker and higher quality. Category Gemstones decorative art stub Garnet and glass doublets were first used around 1850 when it was noted that molten glass would adhere to garnet. It was a popular imitation for all types of gems in many colors because the color of the glass became the only color you saw. With additional Degrees of freedom physics and chemistry degrees of freedom , optical designers have more latitude to correct more Aberration in optical systems optical aberrations , more thoroughly. Types Doublets can come in many forms, though most commercial doublets are achromat s, which are optimized to reduce chromatic aberration while also reducing spherical aberration and other Aberration in optical systems optical aberrations . The lenses are made from glasses with different refractive index refractive indices and different amounts of Dispersion optics dispersion . Often one element is made from Crown glass optics crown glass and the other from flint glass . This combination produces a better image than a simple lens. Trilobite s, which are now extinct, had natural doublet lenses. Apochromat s can also be made as doublets. Doublets can be air spaced, cemented, or oiled. Oiled doublets hold the optical fluid in place with surface tension alone. In a cemented doublet, the lenses are held together by an adhesive with mechanical strength, such as optically transparent epoxy . Canada balsam was traditionally used for this purpose. 1. Pake doublet

Image Pake.png thumb right 300px Simulated pake doublet. A Pake Doublet is a characteristic line shape seen in solid state nuclear magnetic resonance and Electron paramagnetic resonance . It was first described by George Pake . It arises from Solid state nuclear magnetic resonance Dipolar coupling dipolar coupling between two spin half nuclei, or from transitions in Solid state nuclear magnetic resonance Quadrupolar interaction quadrupolar nuclei such as deuterium. It is the general shape obtained from an orientationally dependent doublet. The horns of the Pake doublet correspond to the situation when the principal axis of the coupling interaction the inter nuclear vector in the case dipolar coupling and the principal component of the electric field gradient tensor for quadrupolar nuclei is perpendicular to the magnetic field. This situation is the most probable and the intensity is much higher. The feet of the lineshape correspond to the situation when the principal axis of the coupling interaction is parallel to the magnetic field which is much less statistically relevant. 1. Doublet state

Unreferenced stub auto yes date December 2009 In quantum mechanics , a doublet is a quantum state of a system with a spin physics spin of 1 2, such that there are two allowed values of the spin component, 1 2 and 1 2. Quantum systems with two possible states are sometimes called two level system s. Essentially all occurrences of doublets in nature arise from rotational symmetry spin 1 2 is associated with the fundamental representation of the Lie group SU 2 , the group theory group that defines rotational symmetry in three dimensional space. History and applications The term doublet dates back to the 19th century, when it was observed that certain spectral lines of an ionized, excited gas would split into two under the influence of a strong magnetic field , in an effect known as the anomalous Zeeman effect . Such spectral lines were observed not only in the laboratory, but also in astronomical spectroscopy observations, allowing astronomers to deduce the existence of, and measure the strength of magnetic fields around the sun, stars and galaxies. Conversely, it was the observation of doublets in spectroscopy that allowed physicists to deduce that the electron had a spin, and that furthermore, the magnitude of the spin had to be 1 2. See the history section of the article on spin physics for greater detail. Doublets continue to play an important role in physics. For example, the healthcare technology of magnetic resonance imaging is based on nuclear magnetic resonance . In this technology, a spectroscopic doublet occurs in a spin 1 2 atomic nucleus , whose doublet splitting is in the radio frequency range. By applying both a magnetic field and carefully tuning a radio frequency transmitter, the nuclear spins will flip and re emit radiation, in an effect known as the Rabi ... state Triplet state Spin multiplicity DEFAULTSORT Doublet State Category Spectroscopy Category Rotational symmetry Physics stub Quantum stub es Estado doblete fr tat doublet ...   more details

Other uses Doublet disambiguation Unreferenced date December 2009 In etymology , two or more words in the same language are called doublets or etymological twins or possibly triplets, etc. when they have different phonological forms but the same etymological root. Often, but not always, the variants have entered the language through different routes. Because the relationship between words that have the same root and the same meaning is fairly obvious, the term is mostly used to characterize pairs of words that have diverged in meaning. For example English language English pyre and fire are doublets. Subtle differences in the resulting modern words contribute to the richness of the English language, as indicated by the doublets frail and fragile which share the Latin root, fragilis one might refer to a fragile tea cup and a frail old woman , but frail tea cup and fragile old woman are uncommon. For example, the resemblance between levy and levee is obvious, whereas the connection between sovereign and soprano is harder to guess synchronic analysis linguistics synchronically from the forms of the words alone. Refimprove date December 2009 Image Lens6b en.svg right thumb 200px For an achromatic doublet, visible wavelengths have approximately the same focal length. File Achromatic telescope hooke img 1598.jpg thumb Achromatic telescope by Hooke , 18th century. The achromatic telescope is a refracting telescope that uses an achromatic lens to correct for chromatic aberration . How it works When an image passes through a lens, the light is refracted at different angles for different wavelength s. This produces focal length s that are dependent on the color of the light. So, for example, at the focal plane an image may be focused at the red end of the spectrum, but blurred at the blue end. This effect is particularly noticeable the further an object lies from the central axis of the telescope. The image of a star can appear blue on one side and orange on the other. Early refracting telescopes with non achromatic objective s were constructed with very long focal length s to mask the chromatic aberration. An Achromatic telescope uses an achromatic lens to correct for this. An achromatic lens is a compound lenses made with two types of glass with different Dispersion optics dispersion . One element, a wiktionary concave concave lens made out of Flint glass , has relatively high dispersion, while the other, a wiktionary convex convex element made of Crown glass optics Crown glass , has a lower dispersion. 1. Petzval lens

The Petzval lens was developed in 1840 by Joseph Petzval . It consisted of two doublet lenses with an aperture stop in between. The front lens is well corrected for spherical aberrations but introduces Coma optics coma . The second doublet corrects for this and the position of the stop corrects most of the astigmatism . However, this results in additional field curvature and vignetting . The total field of view is therefore restricted to about 30 degrees. An f number of f 3.7 was achievable, which was considerably faster than other lenses of the time. The speed of the lens is ideal for portrait photography since the exposure time could be reduced.
