refimprove date January 2008 File doubloon.jpg thumb right Spanish gold 4 doubloon coin 8 escudos stamped as minted in 1798 The doubloon from Spanish language Spanish dobl n , meaning double , was a two Spanish escudo escudo or 32 Spanish real reales gold coin , weighing 6.77  grams 0.218 troy ounce s . Doubloons were minted in Spain , Mexico , Peru , and Viceroyalty of New Granada Nueva Granada . The term was first used to describe the golden excelente either because of its value of two ducat s or because of the double portrait of Catholic monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella . Doubloons marked 2 S are equivalent to 4 in US gold coins and were traded in that manner. Small 1 2 Escudo coins similar to a US 1 gold piece have no value on them but were worth a Spanish Milled Dollar in trade. In Spain, doubloons were current up to the middle of the 19th century. Isabella II of Spain replaced an escudo based coinage with decimal reales in 1859, and replaced the 6.77  gram dobl n with a new heavier dobl n worth 100 reales and weighing 8.3771  grams 0.268 troy ounces . The last Spanish doubloons showing the denomination as 80 reales were minted in 1849. After their independence, the former Spanish colonies Mexico, Peru and Nueva Granada continued to mint doubloons. Doubloons have also been minted in Portuguese colonies, where they went by the name dobr o , with the same meaning. Image 1840 Escudos.jpg thumb right Moby Dick Coin Known in the numismatic world as a Moby Dick Coin , the Ecuadorian 8 Currency of Ecuador Escudos doubloon , minted in Quito , Ecuador , between 1838 and 1843, is the one ounce of gold sixteen dollar piece Moby Dick Ahab Captain Ahab nails to the mast of the Pequod Moby Dick Pequod , promising it to the first man who raises Cetology of Moby Dick Moby Dick . The coin is first mentioned in Herman Melville s book Moby Dick , in Chapter 36 The Quarter Deck and later at length in Chapter 99 The Doubloon . It is often confused as a Spanish doubloon, but this coin was not struck by the Spanish crown or endorsed by the Spanish government. The Moby Dick coin was minted in the Republic of Ecuador, at the Quito mint, many years after its independence from Spain, reason why the term Spanish must be taken as erroneous when referred to the origin of this rare specimen. cquote Now those noble golden coins of South America are as medals of the sun and tropic token pieces. Here palms, alpacas, and volcanoes sun s disks and stars, ecliptics, horns of plenty, and rich banners waving, are in luxuriant profusion stamped so that the precious gold seems almost to derive an added preciousness and enhancing glories, by passing through those fancy mints, so Spanishly poetic. It so chanced that the doubloon of the Pequod was a most wealthy example of these things. On its round border it bore the letters, Republica del Ecuador Quito. So this bright coin came from a country planted in the middle of the world, and beneath the great equator, and named after it and it had been cast midway up the Andes, in the unwaning clime that knows no autumn. Zoned by those letters you saw the likeness of three Andes summits from one a flame a tower on another on the third a crowing cock while arching over all was a segment of the partitioned zodiac, the signs all marked with their usual cabalistics, and the keystone sun entering the equinoctial point at Libra. The escudo was the name of two distinct Spain Spanish currency denominations. Gold escudo Image doubloon.jpg thumb right An Eight Escudo Coin The first escudo was a gold coin introduced in 1535 1537 , with coins denominated in escudos issued until 1833 . It was initially worth 16 Spanish real reales . When different reales were introduced, the escudo became worth 16 reales de plata in 1642, then 16 reales de plata fuerte or 40 reales de vell n from 1737. Coins Gold coins were issued in denominations of , 1, 2, 4 and 8 escudos, with the 2 escudos coin known as the doubloon . Between 1809 and 1849, coins denominated as 80, 160 and 320 reales de vellon were issued, equivalent, in gold content and value, to the 2, 4 and 8 escudo coins. Most were minted in Madrid, marked with a superscripted M or in Seville bearing an S below and left of the Royal Coat of Arms. The mintmaster s initials appeared on the opposite side. Silver escudo The second escudo was the currency of Spain between 1864 and 1869 . It was subdivided into 100 c ntimos de escudo . The escudo replaced the Spanish real real at a rate of 10 reales 1 escudo. It was itself replaced by the Spanish peseta peseta , at a rate of 2 pesetas 1 escudo, when Spain joined the Latin Monetary Union . The later silver escudo was worth one quarter of the earlier, gold escudo. Coins Copper coins were issued in denominations of , 1, 2 and 5 c ntimos de escudo, with silver 10, 20 and 40 c ntimos de escudo, 1 and 2 escudos, and gold 2, 4 and 10 escudos. The 1 escudo was introduced in 1864, followed by the other silver and gold coins in 1865 and the copper coins in 1866. Unreferenced date March 2007 Pirates Quest For Davy Jones Gold is the board game version of the popular Pirates of the Spanish Main tabletop game. It is produced by WizKids . It represents a simplification of the tabletop game , while retaining most of the crucial elements of gameplay from it. It can be played by two to four players. Players Unlike the Tabletop game, where it is possible to collect different fleets by buying packs from stores, Pirates Quest For Davy Jones Gold comes with set fleets comprising a four mast and a three mast ship in each of four different colours, representing those of four captains Blackheart Red The Blackheart and The Bloody Sword , Calico Cat Green The Treasure Hunter and The Doubloon , Jack Hawkins Blue BlackHawk and Night Hunter and Wesley Yellow The Dolphin and The Mermaid . In the four player variant, each player takes turns to pick a captain, each of whom has his or her own special ability, such as Calico Cat s Ships that can dock at and explore an island all in one go, rather than taking two turns to do so. They also get that captain s two ships. With three players, one captain is excluded. In the two player version, each player controls two captains and four ships. It should be noted that most of the game s contents are compatible with the regular Tabletop game. Playmat Also included in the box is a 28 x 28 inch 70  cm x 70  cm playmat showing seven islands and four cursed zones you can be sent to by Davy Jones Pirates of the Caribbean Davy Jones . Unlike the collectable version, this board is fixed every time you play instead of individual islands being set up on the tabletop at the beginning of each game. Each Cursed Zone can only be escaped by rolling certain values on the dice, either set by the game or chosen by your opponents and failure to escape damages your ships i.e. you must lose a Mast sailing mast Monsters Two sea monsters Kraken and Sea Serpent and five crew treasure cards are also included, with Davy Jon ... more details
