Dove prisms are shaped from a truncated right angle prism geometry prism . A beam of light entering one of the sloped faces of the prism undergoes total internal reflection from the inside of the longest bottom face and emerges from the opposite sloped face. Images passing through the prism are flipped, and because only one reflection takes place, the image is inverted but not laterally transposed. Dove prisms have an interesting property that when they are rotated along their longitudinal axis, the transmitted image rotates at twice the rate of the prism. This property means they can rotate a beam of light by an arbitrary angle, making them useful in beam rotators , which have applications in fields such as interferometry , astronomy , and pattern recognition . Lesso and Padgett 1999 and Moreno et al. 2003, 2004 found that there is a change in the state of polarization of a beam of light on passing through a rotated doveprism. The SGI Prism is a series of Visualization computer graphics visualization systems developed and manufactured by Silicon Graphics SGI . It consists of a block of glass shaped as a right prism geometry geometric prism with right angled triangular end faces. In operation, light enters the large rectangular face of the prism, undergoes total internal reflection twice from the sloped faces, and exits again through the large rectangular face. Because the light exits and enters the glass only at normal incidence, the prism is not dispersion optics dispersive . An image travelling through a Porro prism is rotated by 180 and exits in the opposite direction offset from its entrance point. Since the image is reflected twice, the handedness of the image is unchanged. Porro prisms are most often used in pairs, forming a double Porro prism . A second prism, rotated 90 with respect to the first, is placed such that the beam will traverse both prisms. The net effect of the prism system is a beam parallel to but displaced from its original direction, with the image rotated 180 . As before, the handedness of the image is unchanged.
