  1. Downregulation and upregulation

No footnotes date August 2009 Downregulation upregulation pages where unified by following Wikipedia policy Wikipedia Wikipedia is not a dictionary Downregulation is the process by which a cell biology cell decreases the quantity of a cellular component, such as RNA or protein, in response to an external variable. An increase of a cellular component is called upregulation. An example of downregulation is the cellular decrease in the number of Receptor biochemistry receptors to a molecule, such as a hormone or neurotransmitter , which reduces the cell s sensitivity to the molecule. This phenomenon is an example of a locally acting negative feedback mechanism. An example of upregulation is the increased number of cytochrome P450 cytochrome P450 enzymes in liver cells when xenobiotic molecules such as Polychlorinated dibenzodioxins dioxin are administered resulting in greater degradation of these molecules or the increased numbers of NMDA glutamate receptors found in people who have consumed excessive quantities of alcohol thereby inhibiting those same receptors . Upregulation and downregulation can also happen as a response to toxins or hormones, for example in pregnancy hormones cause cells in the uterus become more sensitive to oxytocin . Receptor downregulation Mechanism The Insulin Receptor The process of downregulation occurs when there are elevated levels of the hormone insulin in the blood. When insulin binds to its receptors on the surface of a cell, the hormone receptor complex undergoes endocytosis and is subsequently attacked by intracellular lysosomal enzymes . The internalization of the insulin molecules provides a pathway for degradation of the hormone as well as for regulation of the number of sites that are available for binding on the cell surface. 1. Desensitization (medicine)

Interventions infobox Name Desensitization medicine Image Caption ICD10 ICD9 99.12 OPS301 OPS301 8 030 MeshID D003888 OtherCodes For medical purposes, desensitization is a method to reduce or eliminate an organism s negative reaction to a substance or stimulus. For example, if a person with diabetes mellitus has a bad allergy allergic reaction to taking a full Dose biochemistry dose of beef insulin , the doctor gives the person a very small amount of the insulin at first. Over a period, larger doses are given until the person is taking the full dose. This is one way to help the body get used to the full dose and to avoid having the allergic reaction to beef origin insulin. At the cellular level, administration of small doses of toxin produces an IgG response which eventually overrides the hypersensitivity hypersensitive IgE response. A different mechanism is responsible for desensitization to antibiotics, which is performed over a shorter time course than desensitization to other allergies. In this form of desensitization, the patient is slowly exposed to a level of antibiotic that produces low grade anaphylaxis. At the end of the procedure, the patient s mast cells have depleted their granular contents, and the patient cannot undergo any allergic response until these cells restore these contents. In pharmacology , desensitization is the loss of responsiveness to the continuing or increasing dose of a drug. Also termed tachyphylaxis , Downregulation and upregulation downregulation , fade or drug tolerance . This may be an important area to consider for the future design of safer drugs. ref http www.bio balance.com DrugSafety.htm http www.bio balance.com Bot generated title ref See also Downregulation and upregulation downregulation physiological tolerance reverse tolerance hyposensitization References references Category Pharmacodynamics ar kk pl Odczulanie sr Desenzitizacija medicina ...   more details

The inflammation can be caused by conditions in the mouth itself, such as poor oral hygiene , dietary protein deficiency, poorly fitted dentures , or from mouth burns from hot food or drinks, toxic plants, or by conditions that affect the entire body, such as medications , allergic reactions , radiation therapy, or infections . ref cite web year 1969 format PDF work The Reports of the Surgeon General url http profiles.nlm.nih.gov NN B B L N nnbbln.pdf title Effects of Smoking on Pregnancy accessdate 2006 06 23 ref Pathophysiology Severe iron deficiency anemia can lead to stomatitis. Iron is necessary for the upregulation of transcriptional elements for cell replication and repair. Lack of iron can cause the genetic downregulation of these elements, leading to ineffective repair and regeneration of epithelial cells, especially in the mouth and lips. 1. Corepressor

In the field of molecular biology , a corepressor is a substance that inhibits the gene expression expression of gene s. In prokaryote s, corepressors are small molecule s whereas in eukaryote s, corepressors are protein s. A corepressor does not directly bind to DNA , but instead indirectly regulates gene expression by binding to repressor s. A corepressor downregulation and upregulation downregulates or represses the expression of genes by binding to and activating a repressor transcription factor . The repressor in turn binds to a gene promoter biology promoter a sequence of DNA adjacent to the regulated gene , thereby blocking transcription of that gene. Function Prokaryotes In prokaryote s, the term corepressor is used to denote the activating ligand biochemistry ligand of a repressor protein. For example, the Escherichia coli E. coli tryptophan repressor TrpR is only able to bind to DNA and repress transcription of the trp operon trp operon when its corepressor tryptophan is bound to it. TrpR in the absence of tryptophan is known as an aporepressor and is inactive in repressing gene transcription. ref name pmid9022683 cite journal author Evans PD, Jaseja M, Jeeves M, Hyde EI title NMR studies of the Escherichia coli Trp repressor.trpRs operator complex journal Eur.
