Drest Gurthinmoch was a king of the Picts . The Pictish Chronicle king lists all give him a reign of 30 years between Nechtan I of the Picts Nechtan and Galan of the Picts Galan . Unreferenced date December 2009 Drest was monarch king of the Picts from 724 until 726 or 729. He succeeded Nechtan mac Der Ilei when the latter abdicated and entered a monastery in 724. Neither the Annals of Ulster , nor the Annals of Tigernach , name Drest s father. The earlier versions of the Pictish Chronicle king lists simply name Drest and Elpin as kings after Nechtan. However, a late version, which includes Nechtan s second reign in 728&ndash 729, makes Drest s father one Talorgan. This version includes the otherwise unknown Carnach son of Ferach and engus son of Bridei, and is generally not such as would inspire great confidence. Since Nechtan abidicated in favour of Drest, some kinship between them seems probable. A number of Nechtan s sons are reported to have died, so that Drest, whether a nephew, a son in law or cousin may have been Nechtan s nearest male kin. It may be that Drest was the son of the Talorg son of Drostan, brother of Nechtan &mdash a half brother or, perhaps a foster brother &mdash who had been imprisoned in 713. Whatever his descent, Drest s rule appears to have been quickly challenged. In 725, Simul son of Drest was imprisoned, but by whom is unknown. In 726 Nechtan was imprisoned by Drest, following which Alp n I of the Picts Alp n , the Elpin of the king lists, deposed Drest. By 728 it appears that Drest, Nechtan, Alp n and engus I of the Picts engus mac Fergusa were engaged in a war for the Pictish throne. Drest mac Caustant n was king of the Picts , in modern Scotland , from about 834 until 836 or 837. He was the son of King Caustant n of the Picts Caustant n and succeeded his uncle, engus II of the Picts engus , to the throne. The length of his reign is based on the various Pictish king lists, where he is associated with Talorgan son of Uuthoil . Some sources, such as John of Fordun , conflate the two kings as Durstolorger , perhaps under the influence of the earlier Talorgan II of the Picts Dubthalorc . It was once thought that Pictish kings in this period were also kings of D l Riata , but this is no longer supported. Drest or Drust , son of Erp, is a mythology legendary king of the Picts whose reign is recorded in the king lists of the Pictish Chronicle . Cailtram son of Girom was a king of the Picts . The Pictish Chronicle king lists have him ruling for one or six years between his brother Gartnait I of the Picts Gartnait son of Girom and Talorc II of the Picts Talorc son of Muircholach . No two lists which give a possibly authentic version of his name agree on its form, variants including Cailtarni and Cailtaine. Later versions include Kelhiran, Kelturan and Kyburcan. He is the third son of Girom listed as king, although Drest IV of the Picts Drest son of Girom is not explicitly stated to have been a brother of Cailtram and Gartnait.
