Unreferenced stub auto yes date December 2009 Driftmigration is the phenomenon in which bird migration migrating bird s are blown off course by the winds at the time they are in flight. It is more likely to happen to birds heading south in autumn because the large numbers of inexperienced young birds are less able to compensate than the adults heading north in spring. http rspb.royalsocietypublishing.org content 270 Suppl 1 S8 Drift is assisted by disorientating conditions such as mist or drizzle, and can result in large numbers of birds arriving together in an area in which they are not normally seen. In the UK this is called a fall, while in the U.S. it s known as a fallout, though in the latter case, it need not involve vagrant birds. An example would be an east wind in September blowing Scandinavia n migrants such as Bluethroat s, Wryneck s, and the continental race of European Robin Robin onto the east coast of England and Scotland , leading to temporary concentrations of these species at headlands like Spurn . for the 1936 film Drift Fence Drift fences were used in the Texas Panhandle from 1882 to 1887 to control cattle drift the winter migration of livestock to warmer territory. Long sections of barbed wire fence were built by ranchers to keep the cattle from moving to the southern part of the state. This fence was disastrous for the animals during the Winter of 1886 1887 winter of 1886 87 . Deep snow covered the grasslands, and the fence prevented the herds from migrating to greener pastures. As a result, the cattle froze to death along the fences. Some 75 percent perished during the winter. The drift fence in Texas was built to hold back cattle from Oklahoma , Colorado , and Kansas from crossing into the state during blizzard s. It was strung along the northern boundary of each ranch. The fence extended for two hundred miles in Texas, with a gate every three miles. As a result of the 1887 blizzard, Texas in 1889 passed a law prohibiting fencing of public property. The fence was hence removed in 1890. ref Texas State Historical Survey Committee, Historical Marker, 1969, Dumas Travel Station, Dumas, Texas ref The term is currently used for any long, continuous fence used to control the movement of animals in a particular open area, or to collect animals for research. In telecommunication , a drift is a comparatively long term change in an attribute, value, or operational parameter of a system or equipment. The drift should be characterized, such as diurnal frequency drift and output level drift. Drift is usually undesirable and unidirectional, but may be bidirectional, cyclic, or of such long term duration and low excursion rate as to be negligible. ref http www.its.bldrdoc.gov fs 1037 fs 1037c.htm Federal Standard 1037C ref Drift is also common in pseudo synchronised streaming applications, such as low latency audio streaming over TCP IP . Normally both ends of a streaming connection would stay in sync with a master clock but TCP IP does not provide this master clock mechanism. Therefore applications running fixed clocks will drift apart over time and glitch es will occur. This is usually fixed by controlling jitter or drift, by slightly altering the clock speed at one end of the connection. Drift can be removed from signals by signal combination. A drift pin is not used as a punch in the traditional sense of the term. A drift pin is used as an aid in aligning bolt or rivet holes prior to inserting a fastener. A drift punch is constructed as a tapered rod, with the hammer acting on the large end of the taper. The tapered end of a drift punch is placed into the semi aligned bolt holes of two separate components, and then driven into the hole. As it is driven in, the taper forces the two components into alignment, allowing for easy insertion of the fastener . Unlike most punches, force should never be applied to the tip of drift pin. Drift pins are especially useful for aligning fastener holes in structural steel members. Spud wrench es used for assembling truss es and steel beams have tapered handles to use as drift pins. About the aircraft instrument for measuring wind speeds the World War I bombsight Drift Sight A drift meter , also drift indicator and drift sight , is an optical device used to improve dead reckoning for aircraft navigation . It consists of a small telescope extended vertically through the bottom of the aircraft with the eyepiece inside the fuselage at the navigator s station. In condensed matter physics and electrochemistry , drift current is the electric current , or movement of charge carrier s, which is due to the applied electric field , often stated as the electromotive force over a given distance. No footnotes date August 2009 Drift diving is a type of recreational diving where the diver is transported by the currents caused by the tide or in a river . The current gives the diver the impression of flying and allows the diver to cover long distances underwater, possibly seeing more habitats and formations than usual. Often drift diving is performed more for the experience of underwater flight and less for interactions with underwater life, which, given the speed at which most divers move, are reduced. Tidal streams can keep an area free from sediment , increasing visibility. Precautions Normal precautions for drift diving are to have a supporting boat follow the divers and to use a surface marker buoy . Drift diving requires Diver training specialized training and certification to be done safely and properly citation needed date November 2011 . Many dive agencies citation needed date November 2011 with Open Water Scuba Instructors offer drift diving training as part of their Advanced Open Water Diver training, and it is one of the specialties available therein. Drift diving requires more rigorous planning to be executed safely. In contrast to normal diving, drift diving is generally not planned to coincide with slack water . It is important to consider the direction of Tide Current tidal streams as well as their strength to avoid divers being swept into dangerous areas such as shipping lanes . It is also important to plan for the danger of separation, either underwater or at the surface. Each diver should carry an appropriate signaling device and compass. It is important for the diver to also have knowledge of the local rules pertaining to the use of surface marker buoys, as in some parts of the world, surface marker buoys alone are not legally sufficient signaling devices, and either of the international diver down flag s in the appropriate size , or perhaps both, might be required while drift diving. Image Greenland East Coast 7.jpg right thumb Drift ice, Greenland Drift ice is ice that floats on the surface of the water in cold regions, as opposed to fast ice , which is attached fastened to a shore. Usually drift ice is carried along by winds and sea current s, hence its name, drift ice . When the drift ice is driven together into a large single mass, it is called pack ice . Wind and currents can pile up ice to form ridges three to four metres high, creating obstacles difficult for powerful icebreaker s to penetrate. Typically areas of pack ice are identified by high percentage of surface coverage by ice e.g., 80 100 . An ice floe is a large piece of drift ice that might range from tens of metres yards to several kilometres in diameter . Wider chunks of ice are called ice fields . The two major ice packs are the Arctic ice pack and the Antarctic ice pack .
