  1. Stochastic drift

In probability theory , stochastic drift is the change of the average value of a stochastic process stochastic random process . A related term is the drift rate which is the rate at which the average changes. This is in contrast to the random fluctuations about this average value. For example, the process which counts the number of heads in a series of math n math coin toss es has a drift rate of 1 2 per toss. Stochastic drifts in population studies Longitudinal studies of secular events are frequently conceptualized as consisting of a trend component fitted by a polynomial , a cyclical component often fitted by an analysis based on autocorrelation s or on a Fourier series , and a random component stochastic drift to be removed. In the course of the time series analysis , identification of cyclical and stochastic drift components is often attempted by alternating autocorrelation analysis and differencing of the trend. Autocorrelation analysis helps to identify the correct phase of the fitted model while the successive differencing transforms the stochastic drift component into white noise . 1. Cardiovascular drift

orphan date July 2010 Cardiovascular drift CVD, CV sub drift sub is the phenomenon where some Circulatory system cardiovascular responses begin a time dependent change, or drift after around 10 minutes of exercise in a warm or neutral environment. It is characterised by decreases in mean Blood pressure arterial pressure and stroke volume and a parallel increase in heart rate . It is influenced by many factors, most notably the ambient temperature, Dehydration Avoiding dehydration hydration and the amount of muscle tissue activated during exercise. To promote cooling, blood flow to the skin is increased, resulting in a shift in fluids from blood plasma to the skin tissue. This results in a decrease in pulmonary arterial pressure and reduced stroke volume in the heart. To maintain cardiac output at reduced pressure, the heart rate must be increased. 1. Drift mining

Onesource date November 2007 Drift mining is either the mining of a placer deposit by underground methods, or the working of coal seams accessed by adit s driven into the surface outcrop of the coal bed. Drift is a more general mining term, meaning a near horizontal passageway in a mine, following the bed of coal, for instance or vein of ore. A drift may or may not intersect the ground surface. ref Paul W. Va. coal mine 1908.jpg thumb 300px Drift mine entry in West Virginia, 1908. Photo by Lewis Hine . Nome, Alaska Drift mining methods were used extensively to mine placer deposits during the early years of the Nome mining district . During summer, surface deposits could be worked, but some placer deposits were buried too deeply for surface placering. In addition, water to wash the gold from the placers was not available in the winter. Many miners tunnelled into deep placer deposits, bringing out the high grade gravels to be washed at the spring thaw. Most of the ground in Nome is permafrost . By drift mining, miners were able to recover much of the gold buried under the permafrost. Gold at Nome was concentrated in three ancient beach lines, now inshore, above sea level, and buried under roughly fifty feet of permafrost overlain by two feet of tundra . 1. Drift velocity

The drift velocity is the average velocity that a particle, such as an electron , attains due to an electric field . It can also be referred to as Axial Drift Velocity since particles defined are assumed to be moving along a plane. In general, an electron will rattle around in a Electrical conductor conductor at the Fermi energy Fermi velocity randomly. An applied electric field will give this random motion a small net velocity in one direction. In a semiconductor , the two main carrier scattering mechanisms are ionized impurity scattering and lattice scattering . Because current is proportional to drift velocity, which is, in turn, proportional to the magnitude of an external electric field, Ohm s law can be explained in terms of drift velocity. Drift velocity is expressed in the following equations math J it drift rho cdot v it avg math , where math J it drift math is the current density, math rho math is charge density in units Coulomb C m sup 3 sup , and v sub avg sub is the average velocity of the carriers drift velocity math v it avg mu cdot E math , where is the electron mobility in m 2 V.s and E is the electric field in volt V m. Numerical example Electricity is most commonly conducted in a copper wire. Copper has a density of 8.94  g cm , and an atomic weight of 63.546  g mol, so there are 140685.5  mol m . 1. Drift (linguistics)

There are two types of natural language linguistic drift , a wikt unidirectional unidirectional short term and Period of time cyclic long term drift. Short term unidirectional drift According to Edward Sapir Sapir , drift is the unconscious change in natural language. He gives the example Whom did you see? which is grammatically correct but is generally replaced by Who did you see? Structural symmetry seems to have brought about the change all other wh words are monomorphic . The drift of speech changes dialects and in long terms, it generates new languages. Although it may appear these changes have no direction, in general they do. For example, in the English language, there was the Great Vowel Shift , first described and accounted for in terms of drift by Otto Jespersen Jespersen 1909 1949 . Another example of drift is the tendency in English to eliminate the er comparative formative and to replace it with the more analytic more . Thus, we now regularly hear more kind and more happy instead of the prescriptive kinder , happier . In English, it may be the competition of the er agentive suffix which has brought about this drift, i.e. the eventual loss of the Germanic comparative system in favor of the newer system calqued on French. Moreover, the structural asymmetry of the comparative formation may be a cause of this change. 1. Drift station

Unreferenced stub auto yes date December 2009 A drift station is a term used to describe a temporary or semi permanent facility built on an ice floe . During the Cold War the Soviet Union and the United States maintained a number of stations in the Arctic Ocean for research and espionage , the latter of which were often little more than quickly constructed shacks. Extracting personnel from these stations proved difficult and in the case of the United States, employed early versions of the Fulton surface to air recovery system . 1. Free drift

Orphan date February 2009 Free drift mode refers to a state of Motion 28physics 29 motion engaged by an object in orbit , whereby constant Aircraft attitude attitude is not maintained. When attitude is not maintained, the object is said to be in free drift, thereby relying on its own inertia to avoid attitude drift. This mode is often engaged purposefully as it can be useful when modifying, upgrading, or repairing an object in space, such as the International Space Station ref Malik, 2006. ref . Additionally, it allows work on areas near the thrusters on the ISS that are generally used to maintain attitude ref Malik, 2005. ref . While in free drift it is not possible to fully use the solar arrays on the ISS. This can cause a drop in power generation, requiring the conservation of energy. This may affect many systems that otherwise require a lot of energy ref Bertels, 2006. ref . The amount of time that an object such as the ISS can remain safely in free drift varies depending on moment of intertia, perturbation torques, tidal gradients, etc. The ISS itself generally can last about 45 minutes in this mode. 1. Drift Trikes

Unreferenced date May 2011 Drift Trikes are tricycle s that have slick rear wheels, normally made from a hard plastic material. They are usually ridden on paved road s with a steep downhill gradient and some corners. Smooth roads are preferred to coarse chip seal ed road as coarse surfaces tend to wear rear wheels faster. Riders gather momentum through gravity , although some drift trikes have Bicycle pedal pedal s. Pedals are useful for slow speed riding, but are of no use at high speed. Operating speed for drift trikes is between 25 and 65km h. Operating the trikes at such high speeds can be very dangerous, as there are no Drift Trike specific courses. All of the drifting is done almost entirely on public streets, tailing the designated vehicle. To achieve the desired velocity , a tow line is attached to the trailer hitch of the flagship vehicle and riders all grab on to the line at different sections and then break away at the desired speed. Once up to speed, the differs can perform tricks such as tail whips, fish tails, spin around in circles in a trolley type motion , and even drift on two wheels, leaving one in the air. Trike Drifting is very dangerous, and the possibility of colliding with another drifter or oncoming vehicle is very real. Helmets and full body protection are necessary for safety. The sport is not well known, and is infracting many traffic and safety laws.
