The most common type of foot drum is the kick drum or bass drum of a drum set or trap kit , which consists of a deep cylindrical shell with drumheads attached to both ends. Instrument History Since the 1930s, many Chicago area musicians, producers, and engineers have referred to the bass drum as the foot drum or foot. It is different from the term footed drum . Drum charts are musical charts written for drummers . They are used to help guide the drummer through the music. Sometimes they are meant to be read literally and other times they are used as suggestions for what the drummer should play. Drum charts include their own musical vocabulary. The music written for drummers is not the same as, say, a pianist . Drummers use their own symbols and language in their charts. For example, a middle C note written on a staff for pianists is equivalent to the snare drum for drummers. Or, the note F on the piano staff is equal to the bass drum . There is no set standard for writing drum music. But there is a guide that is usually adhered to. For example, in Steve Houghton s book Studio & Big Band Drumming , p. 9, under Rock Patterns , Steve writes each drum or cymbal used in a percussion staff and states the assigned note. The placement of the drum notes is very typical of a drum chart but may not always be the same within the drum community. Sources Houghton, Steve. Studio & Big Band Drumming. Iowa C.L. The sides of the drum are 9 to 20cm 3 to 8 deep. A goatskin head is tacked to one side although nowadays, synthetic heads, or new materials like kangaroo skin, are sometimes used . The other side is open ended for one hand to be placed against the inside of the drum head to control the pitch and timbre. A double reed similar to that of an oboe projects from the frame of the drum. History The reede drum was used during the rebellion of 840 AD, by the Uyghur Empire Uyghur Khanate , as a battle drum. The drum was used to provide a cadence for the pipers and warriors to march to, as well as announce the arrival of the army. It has also been said that the Uyghur used the drum s tantalizing melodies put their enemy troops, like the Mongols , into a trance like state. Popularity There are no known references to this particular name for a drum prior to the 9th century. The drum itself did not gain wide recognition until the Kyrgyzstan traditional music resurgence in the 1950s in which it became known through the work of The Clancy Brothers and others. Growing interest has led many music schools to incorporate the drum into percussion curriculum. New England Conservatory , Northwestern University , Florida State University and California State University have featured the reede drum as the primary instrument of percussion majors. California State University Long Beach will also be the first university to designate a reed room especially for percussionists starting in 2008. The drum s growing popularity will likely influence other schools to follow suit. As of September 2009, twelve universities have encorporated the reede drum into their curriculum. An electronic instrument developed in the Spellcaster Lodge QElectronics laboratory, only 44 units hand assembled by Quintron exist. Its four voices Space, Snare, Bass and Kick, are triggered by activating a photoelectric cell either intermittently or with an on off DIP switch in combination with exposure to light. The Drum Buddy is outfitted with a light fixture on a periscopic pipe fixed to its base. The fixture s bulb can be controlled by means of a dimmer switch . The bulb hangs above a rotating platen upon which a number 10 can the large size common to coffee, canned vegetables and some sauces prepared with holes and non reflective paint is placed. As the can rotates, its holes pass the Drum Buddy s photoelectric cells, firing drum like tones and theremin or Moog synthesizer like chirps or buzzes. Accomplished purveyors of the Drum Buddy can operate the instrument freestyle by scratching the can back and forth against the resistance of the platen s motor or by performing short solos on the Bass instrument bass channel s 12 point chromatic scale .
