  1. Backsticking

Backsticking is a snare drum technique characterized by swinging the butt of the drumstick to play the drum. There are many different methods. The most common method is executed simply by turning the right wrist upward sharply at a 90 degree angle. Backsticking is typically only practiced among marching Drum and bugle corps modern drum corps or drumline s, rather than concert or orchestral snare drummers. Notable users of backsticking include Jeff Queen musician Jeff Queen , of the Broadway musical Blast musical Blast . It appears that champion drummer A.R. Carrington had mastered backsticking at least right handed backsticking and a few other tricks not seen recently e.g., a 5 stick solo as early as the 1870s as depicted in the bottom middle image of this collage ref name fielddrums.com http www.fielddrums.com 2009 01 was carrington back sticking in 1870.html ref from that period. 1. Indoor percussion ensemble

File EHSINDOOR.jpg thumb Escambia High School Indoor Drumline on the floor for competition An indoor percussion ensemble or indoor drumline consists of the marching percussion or battery and front ensemble or pit sections of a marching band or Drum and bugle corps modern drum corps . The only exceptions are in concert divisions e.g. Percussion Scholastic Concert Open where the marching line is absent and the ensemble consists entirely of a pit. Indoor Percussion marries elements of music performance, marching, and theater thus, the activity is often referred to as percussion theater . Although most indoor percussion ensembles are affiliated with high schools, there are also many independent groups that draw participants from a large area. Independent groups typically start rehearsing in October and groups associated with high schools start after marching band season ends in November or December, and the season culminates with WGI World Championships in April. 1. Bleu Raeders Drum and Bugle Corps

The Bleu Raeders were a Drum and bugle corps modern drum corps based out of New Orleans from 1971 1981. The Raeders made their Drum Corps International DCI Finals debut in their first year of competition 1972 . Their performance in the Finals was only the 18th in their history this remains the quickest ascent ever to a DCI Finals position. They were also the first Southern United States Southern corps to reach Finals. In 1974, the organization merged with Stardusters splitting with that group and re establishing the Raeders name in 1975 only to merge with the Stardusters again in 1981 to become the Louisiana Southernairs . This name was taken from a New Orleans corps from the 1950s . Ricky and Ronnie Chapagral and Richard Flaig , while marching with East Jefferson High School and the Bleu Raeders, wrote the drumline wiktionary drum cadence cadence Bleu Raeders , which was brought by members of the line back to their college lines at Louisiana State University LSU and Ole Miss , both of which still use it as their primary cadence. David Arthur, also of E.J.Hs., wrote the melodic parts to this cadence. Many high school drumlines across the N. Gulf Coast from Texas to the Florida Panhandle still play this cadence, or derivatives thereof. 1. Drum solo

Refimprove date November 2006 A drum solo is an Solo music instrumental solo played on a drum kit . A drum solo may be set or improvised, and of any length, up to being the main performance. In Rock music rock , drum solos are unique in that traditionally they are minimally or never accompanied, whereas other instruments may play solos accompanied or unaccompanied. They are also typically free form in that they do not necessarily adhere to the tempo, style or structure of the song they accompany. In jazz , drum solos more typically adhere strictly to the tempo and form of the song, and may be accompanied sporadically by the other instruments they may also trade fours , or take alternating four bar solos with the rest of the band. They may also trade eights, twelves in the case of a blues , twos, single bars, or full choruses. A drum lift is a passage in which singing is backed only by the drums and no other music. It is not normally considered a solo, as the primary focus remains on the singing, however it bears some similarity to a solo. A drum lift may be set or improvised, simple or elaborate, and may vary in length from part of a line to an entire verse. In marching band or Drum and bugle corps modern drum corps , a drum section feature allows the remainder of the ensemble to create challenging formations without having to play their instruments at the same time, as depicted by the movie Drumline film Drumline . In years past the drum solo was a standalone work. Beginning in the mid to late 80s, however, drum solos, even extended ones, tended to be integrated into the overall flow of the music. This occurred earlier such as in the 1976 Blue Devils show in Channel One Suite, mimicking the drum break in the Buddy Rich original , but as time passed and show flow became more important, the stand alone solo became less popular and is rarely heard in contemporary music. Unreferenced date October 2007 Image Bluecoats drum corps 2007 pit.JPG thumb 250px right The Bluecoats Drum and Bugle Corps pit for their 2007 performance, Criminal. In a marching band or Drum and bugle corps modern drum corps , the front ensemble or pit is the stationary percussion instrument percussion ensemble. This ensemble is typically placed in front of the American football field football field , though some groups will work the front ensemble into a tight pod onto the marching field. Originally, the front ensemble consisted of keyboard percussion and timpani , the marching versions of which are heavy and awkward. Groups began adding more and more traditional percussion instruments to the pit, and in its modern form, the ensemble may contain any type of percussion instrument from cymbal s and drum kit s to Afro Cuban percussion such as conga s, Bongo drum bongos , claves , and Cowbell instrument cowbell s, to world percussion such as djembe s. Some high school marching bands opt not to march any percussion instruments, but instead have a full front ensemble. The main emphasis of the pit in drum corps style groups are the mallet instruments marimba , vibraphone , bells and xylophone . Some marching band circuits also allow non standard instruments such as the violin or electronic instruments such as synthesizer s and electric guitar s in the pit. However, this is extremely controversial and divisive within the marching band community, and was prohibited outright by Drum Corps International until 2008, when it was passed in an 11 4 vote. Also, in some cases pit members can be used for operating auxiliary equipment such as props. Occasionally props will be placed in the pit area for pit members to use. In Indoor percussion ensemble Indoor Drumline , the front ensemble may not necessarily be placed at the front as the name suggests. The show designers place the pit where it would be most effective for the show. In a Musical theater stage musical , the accompanyin ...   more details
