He is king of the land of Panchala . In his youth he studies with, and becomes a friend of Drona . Drupada makes him promise to share all his fortunes with him. Later, when Drupada becomes king of Panchaladesa, Drona reminds him of his promise and asks for wealth. Drupada mocks Drona for taking a promise made in their irresponsible days of youth. Deeply angered, Drona becomes the teacher of the Kuru princes of Hastinapura. After their education is complete, Drona asks them to defeat Drupada. In a surprise attack, Arjuna, the Pandava, disarms Drupada and forces him to surrender a part of his kingdom. Drupada is father to the reborn Amba fictional character Amba , who in her next reincarnation took birth as a woman called Shikhandi . Because Sikhandi remembered his previous birth as a woman he was sometimes known as Shikhandini . In his quest to gain revenge on Drona, Drupada , with the aid of the Deva Hinduism devas , fathers Draupadi and Dhrishtadyumna , the latter finally killing Drona.Draupadi gets married to arjuna and finally the pandavs . He was originally born as a girl child named Shikhandini to Drupada , the king of Panchala Kingdom Panchala . Shikhandi fought in the Kurukshetra war on the side of the Pandavas , along with his father Drupada and brother Dhristadyumna . He had been born in an earlier lifetime as a woman named Amba Mahabharata Amba , who had won in swayamvara by Bhishma for his younger brother and later sent her back to her lover who insulted her and sent her back to Bhishma. Rejected by Bhishma for marriage, due to his oath of lifelong celibacy, and feeling deeply humiliated and wanting revenge, Amba carried out great prayers and penance with the desire to be the cause of Bhishma s death. Amba was then reborn as Shikhandini. King Drupada knew who she was and she was sent on exile as king Drupada feared a conflict with Bhishma. She again did great prayers and gained manhood. In the battle of Kurukshetra , Bhishma recognised him as Amba reborn, and not wanting to fight a woman , lowered his weapons. Knowing that Bhishma would react thus to Shikhandi, Arjuna hid behind Shikhandi and attacked Bhishma with a devastating volley of arrows. Thus, only with Shikhandi s help could Arjuna deal a death blow to Bhishma , who had been virtually invincible until then. Shikhandi was finally killed by Ashwatthama on the 18th day of battle.     Kampilya lang sa was the Capital of the Panchala Kingdom ruled by Drupada during Mahabharata period. It is mentioned in Mahabharata that when Pandava s were in exile and staying at place called Ekachakra Etawah, Uttar Pradesh , they came to know that Drupada , King of Panchala , had announced the Swayamvara of his daughter Draupadi . Then they came to Kampilya Kampil, Uttar Pradesh , the capital of Drupada. He was the commander of the Pandava army during the great battle, and he killed Drona . Drupada desired a son who could kill Drona who had humiliated him in battle and taken half his kingdom. With the help of two brahmins, Drupada undertook the sacrifice. After his wife made the sacrificial offerings, Dhrishtadyumna emerged from the fire, a fully grown powerful young and armed man, together with his sister Draupadi. He already had martial and religious knowledge. Even though he was the prophesied killer of Drona, he was accepted as a student by Drona, and he learns the advanced military arts. In the war When his sister Draupadi was won in an archery competition by a young brahmin at her swayamvara , a ritual by which a Royal Hindu Princess could choose her own husband in court, in front of all the princes and nobility. Dhristadyumna, Draupadi s brother secretly followed the brahmin and his sister, only to discover that the brahmin was in fact Arjuna , one of the five Pandava brothers. At the great battle of Kurukshetra, on the advice of Krishna and Arjuna , Dhristadyumna was appointed the commander of the Pandava army. Along with her sisters Ambika Mahabharata Ambika and Ambalika , she was taken by force by Bhishma from their Swayamvara . Bhishma challenged the assembled Kings and Princes and defeated them. He presented them to Satyavati for marriage to Vichitravirya , the king of Hastinapura . Vichitravirya married only her sisters, because Amba told Bhishma that she was in love with king of Salva and not ready to marry anyone else. Hearing this from her, Bhishma had discussions with many learned people and permitted Amba to go to Salva s place. But Salva rejected her as well, in shame of losing the combat against Bhishma at the Swayamvara. Amba then returned to Bhishma and demanded that he marry her. He declined since he had already taken a vow of bachelorhood. Enraged that she was going to be an unmarriageable woman, she swore to kill him, at least in her next life, and went to Guru Parshuram who was the teacher of Bhishma. Parshuram called Bhishma and asked him to marry Amba or have a fight with him. Bhishma decided to fight with Parshuram they had a great fight and at the end Bhishma won the battle. But Amba s revenge was not done. She did great prayers and penances as a result, she gained a boon from Lord Shiva that she would be the reason for Bhishma s death in the next birth. She was re born as Shikhandi the son of Drupada . In the battle of Kurukshetra , Shikhandi was instrumental in Bhishma s death.     Charmanwati alias Charmanvati, was a river mentioned in the epic Mahabharata . It is identified as the modern day Chambal River Chambal river, a tributary of Ganges . This river was one of the destinations along with other rivers like Ganges and Yamuna of the people who migrated from river Sarasvati River Saraswati , as it dried up, due to its proximity. The word Chambal has the meaning fish in some of the Dravidian languages like Telugu language Telugu . The Matsya Kingdom Matsya rulers had their origin from the banks of this river.
