The novel is widely acclaimed as Robinson s best, a large step forward in ambition from previous books, and this was reflected in its critical and commercial response. The novel was shortlisted for the American Edgar Award and won the Anthony Award. Plot summary The novel concerns the unearthing of a skeleton from the sunken village of Hobbs End Hobb s End , which was turned into a reservoir during the war and now, due to severe dry weather, has been revealed again. The novel is told in two strands, one in the present, and one in the 1940s from the time just before the reservoir was created. The geography described by Robinson indicates that he based the location of Hobb s End on the village of West End, and the Thornfield Reservoir on the actual Thruscross Reservoir . The small bridge over the Washburn becomes the Fairy Bridge and the flax mill is mentioned explicitly. 1. Annual Dry Season Offensive

orphan date February 2010 An Annual Dry Season Offensive is a type of low intensity warfare typically practiced by national governments against ethnic insurgent groups fighting for independence or autonomy. This type of warfare usually occurs in countries with poor transportation infrastructure and a climate that makes fighting battles or even holding territory during parts of the year very difficult. Such an offensive is carried out by Centralised government central states that for geographical, political, financial and historical reasons must restrict troop movement and supply to the dry season . Central Government forces usually move out of well established base areas into insurgent territory where they attempt to take and hold as much territory as possible while inflicting as many casualties as possible on the insurgent army. The army will also typically inflict as much material damage as possible in areas supporting the insurgency. The offensive also typically extends to collective punishments of the civilian population of the country. At the end of the offensive, the army gives back all of the territory taken and returns to its base areas until the next dry season . The strategy behind Annual Dry Season Offensives is to slowly wear down an insurgency or to at least contain it. It can also prevent insurgent groups from gaining defacto independence from the government. The strategy has never on its own defeated an insurgent movement, but it can pressure insurgent groups into political negotiations. It is often used against groups that demand independence from a central government and have a large base of local ethnic support. The governments of Burma and the Sudan currently engage in annual dry season offensives. Cambodia and Vietnam have engaged in such Vietnamese border raids in Thailand offensives during their war against Cambodian insurgent groups in the past. North Vietnam historically engaged in such offensives during a proxy war between irregular groups in Laos ...   more details

  1. Dry riser

Image Dry Riser.jpg thumb right 200px A dry riser inlet box at Park Street Car Park in Cambridge , United Kingdom . A dry riser is a main vertical pipe intended to distribute water to multiple levels of a building or structure as a component of the fire suppression systems. The pipe is maintained empty of water. The dry riser is the opposite of a wet riser or wet standpipe system where the pipes are kept full of water for manual or automatic fire fighting operations. Dry risers have to have fire engine access within 18m of the dry riser inlet box. Dry Risers in occupied buildings have to be within a fire resistant shaft, usually one of a building s fire escape staircase enclosures. Depending on regional nomenclature, this may refer to a Standpipe firefighting standpipe , intended to provide water to hose connections, or could refer to a vertical main pipe in an automatic Fire sprinkler system dry pipe fire sprinkler system . A dry Standpipe firefighting standpipe includes a fire department connection which is an external access point at ground level through which water can be pumped from the fire department s fire apparatus fire engine pump to firefighters hose attachments on each floor. Dry Pipe Fire Sprinkler System A dry pipe fire sprinkler system is one in which pipes are filled with pressurized air, rather than water. This air holds a remote valve, known as a dry pipe valve, in a closed position. Located in a heated space, the dry pipe valve prevents water from entering the pipe until a fire causes one or more sprinklers to operate. Once this happens, the air escapes and the dry pipe valve releases. Water then enters the pipe, flowing through open sprinklers onto the fire.
