Image Zecchino Antonio Venier 1382.jpg thumb right upright 0.90 Sequins from the reign of Antonio Venier 1382 1400 , one of a long list of Venetian doges under whom sequins were minted. The sequin lang it zecchino is a gold coin weighing convert 3.5 g of .986 gold, minted by the Republic of Venice from the 13th century onwards. The design of the Venetian gold ducat , or zecchino , remained unchanged for over 500 years, from its introduction in 1284 to the takeover of Venice by Napoleon in 1797. No other coin design has ever been produced over such a long historical period. The 500 year run of the zecchino is unique in history. The reverse legend expands to, Sit tibi, Christe, datus, quem tu regis, iste ducatus which translates as, To thee, O Christ, this Duchy, which thou rulest, be dedicated. Initially called ducat ducato , for the ruling Doge of Venice, who was prominently depicted on it, it was called the zecchino after the name of the Venice Venetian mint, the zecca , since 1543 when Venice began minting a silver coin also called a ducat. The name of the mint ultimately derives from the Arabic language Arabic sikka, meaning a Die manufacturing coin mould or die . In some regions, in later centuries, these type of coins were stitched to women s clothing such as headdresses this eventually led to the origin of the more modern word sequins to denote small shiny, circular decorations. Following the Venetian model, similar coins were used for centuries throughout the Mediterranean. After two hundred years of continuous zecchino production, the Byzantine Empire imitated with the basilikon . In 1478, the Ottoman Empire introduced a similar unit. In 1535, the Knights Hospitaller of Malta did so. The Ottoman and the Maltese coins were also gold. Because the zecchino of Venice was issued for many centuries under a long list of doges, coin collectors often try to accumulate a complete set of zecchinos of all the doges. Chervontsy were minted until 1757 when they were displaced by the golden ruble with a lower alloy and by counterfeits of the Dutch ducat, which by then met the demand for trade in gold coins. 1. Dentelin

Dentelin was a region of the Frankish Empire disputed between Austrasia and Neustria . Mentioned in the Chronicle of Fredegar , the Duchy of Dentelin included far north western parts of modern France and south western parts of Belgium . The cities of Boulogne sur Mer , Th rouanne , Tournai , Arras , and Cambrai lay within the duchy. Dentelin formed part of the inheritance of the Merovingian king of Neustria Chlothar II , but was lost by him to his cousins, Theudebert II and Theuderic II , following the battle of Dormelles in 599. Chlothar, who outlasted his rival kinsmen and became sole Frankish king, retained Dentelin when he installed his son Dagobert I as king of Austrasia in 623. When Dagobert died in 639, Dentelin was included in Neustria, and remained part of that kingdom afterwards. 1. Ezekiel's Vision (Raphael)

Infobox Painting image file Raffael 099.jpg title Ezekiel s Vision artist Raphael year c. 1518 type Oil painting Oil on panel height width city Florence museum Palazzo Pitti Ezekiel s Vision is a c. 1518 painting by Raphael showing the prophet Ezekiel s vision of God in majesty. It is housed in the Palatine Gallery of Palazzo Pitti , Florence , central Italy. History The work is remembered by Renaissance art biographer Giorgio Vasari as property of a Bologna Bolognese nobleman, Vincenzo Ercolani. There is trace of payment by him to Raphael for 8 ducat Italian coin ducats in 1510, but this is generally considered just a down payment, since stylistically the work inspired for example by Michelangelo s Sistine Chapel ceiling cannot date to before 1516. In Florence since as early as 1589, it was ceded to Francesco I de Medici and was placed at the Uffizi . The painting is known to be at Palazzo Pitti in 1697. In 1799 it was robbed by the French, who kept it in Paris until returning it back in 1816. The work was once considered to be by the hand of Giulio Romano , with Raphael providing only the drawing. However, it has been subsequently assigned to Raphael.
