It is situated on top of Calton Hill, Edinburgh Calton Hill , overlooking Edinburgh city centre. Dugald Stewart was a Professor of the University of Edinburgh , holding the chair of moral philosophy from 1786 until his death. The Royal Society of Edinburgh commissioned the monument, and selected the site. The monument was built in 1831 to the design of architect William Henry Playfair , who modelled his design on the Choragic Monument of Lysicrates in Athens , Greece . This example of the architecture of ancient Greece had been brought to wider attention by James Athenian Stuart and Nicholas Revett s illustrated survey, The Antiquities of Athens , published in 1762. The Choragic Monument also provided the model for the nearby Robert Burns Monument, designed by Thomas Hamilton architect Thomas Hamilton around the same time. The monument forms part of a collection of Greek revival architecture in the area, including the National Monument, Edinburgh National Monument and the former Royal High School, Edinburgh Royal High School building. Dugald Sutherland MacColl 10 March 1859 2 December 1948 was a Scotland Scottish Watercolor painting watercolour Painting painter , art critic , lecturer and writer . He was keeper of the Tate gallery for five years. Life MacColl was born in Glasgow and educated at the University of London and the University of Oxford between 1876 and 1884. He also studied at the Westminster School of Art and the Slade School under Alphonse Legros between 1884 and 1892. Although an accomplished watercolourist, he is best remembered as a writer and lecturer on art. From 1890 to 1895 he was art critic for The Spectator , and for Saturday Review London Saturday Review from 1896 to 1906. MacColl became a member of the New English Art Club in 1896, and edited the Architectural Review from 1901 to 1905. He published the authoritative book, Nineteenth Century Art , in 1902 http www.npg.org.uk live search person.asp?LinkID mp02866 and his biography Philip Wilson Steer was awarded the 1945 James Tait Black Memorial Prize .
