  1. Sacramentum (oath)

Other uses Sacramentum disambiguation The Sacramentum was a military oath taken by all Roman legion aries on entering the Roman army , part of the state ritual created by Augustus during his military reforms in the early 1st century CE. By the 3rd century it was administered annually, on 3 January, as attested by the calendar of state ritual discovered at Dura Europos , the so called Feriale Duranum , which dates to the reign of Severus Alexander 222 235 CE . ref A.D. Nock, The roman army and the Roman religious year , Harvard Theological Review 45 1952 187 252 . ref At the same time a new altar to Jupiter Optimus Maximus was erected. In the rare case of punishment by Decimation Roman army decimation , the surviving legionaries were often required to renew this military oath which was part of the state religio at the foundation of Roman military discipline . At the start of the 3rd century Tertullian , in De corona , condemned any Christian soldier s willingness to swear the sacramentum , since baptism was the only sacrament a Christian should observe. ref Noted by Paul Stephenson, Constantine, Roman Emperor, Christian Victor , 2010 58. ref notes Reflist DEFAULTSORT Sacramentum Oath Category Military history of ancient Rome Category Military oaths ancient Rome stub cs Sacramentum p saha fr Sacramentum Rome antique pt Sacramentum sh Sacramentum zakletva ...   more details

  1. Birtha (Mesopotamia)

Birtha lang el ref Ptol. v. 18 Virta , Amm. Marc. xx. 7. 17. ref was an ancient fortress on the river Tigris , which was said to have been built by Alexander the Great . It would seem, from the description of Ammianus, ref l. c. ref to have resembled a modern fortification, flanked by bastions, and with its approaches defended by out works. Shapur II here closed his campaign in 360, and was compelled to retire with considerable loss. D Anville ref Geog. Anc. vol. ii. p. 416. ref identifies this place with modern day Tikrit , Iraq , in which Edward Gibbon ref vol. iii. p. 205. ref agrees with him. The word Birtha in Syriac language Syriac means a castle or fortress, and might be applied to many places. From the known position of Dura Europos Dura , it has been inferred that the remarkable passage of the Tigris by Jovian Emperor Jovian in 363 took place near Tikrit. ref Amm. Marc. xxv. 6. 12 Zosim. iii. 26. ref Towards the end of the 14th century, this impregnable fortress was stormed by Timour Leng . The ruins of the castle are on a perpendicular cliff over the Tigris, about 200 feet 65 m high. This insulated cliff is separated from the town by a broad and deep ditch, which was no doubt filled by the Tigris. At the foot of the castle is a large gate of brick work, which is all that remains standing but round the summit of the cliff the walls, buttresses, and bastions are quite traceable. There are the ruins of a vaulted secret staircase, leading down from the heart of the citadel to the water s edge. ref Rich, Kurdistan , vol. ii. p. 147 comp. Journ. Geog.
