Image VolvoECC.jpg thumb 250px A Volvo ECC. rear The Volvo ECC E nvironmental C oncept C ar was a concept car built by Volvo Cars Volvo in 1992. It was a design exercise in using recycled material. It was powered by a Hybrid electric vehicle hybrid electric and gas turbine engine. Much of the lines were reused in the Volvo S80 . The Volvo ECC was built on the Volvo 850 platform. In contrast to most production hybrids, which use a gasoline piston engine to provide additional acceleration and to recharge the battery storage, the Volvo ECC used a gas turbine engine to drive the generator for recharging. This type of engine has a higher thermodynamic efficiency than the conventional internal combustion engine with pistons. Also in Volvo s design, the fuel is evaporated and mixed with air before ignition. This provides a very low NOx emission. The driver can also switch between gas turbine electric and hybrid by switches on the dashboard. The maximum power available was 95 brake horsepower, with 75 available for continuous use. It had a drag coefficient of 0.23. With the vehicle weighing approximately 300 pounds ... ECC was debuted at a time when California was seeking Zero Pollution Vehicles ZPV . With its gas turbine, the Volvo ECC was not a zero emissions vehicle, and hence did not meet the needs of the time ... , many of the concepts tested in the ECC may prove of value in future concept and production vehicles. Patent related uncertainty around elliptic curve cryptography ECC , or ECC patents , is one of the main factors limiting its wide acceptance. Facts Mr Sharp was suspended without pay for 5 days because of his absences. This put him in financial difficulty, the welfare officer would not help, and so he quit so he could collect holiday pay immediately. He then claimed constructive unfair dismissal. The Employment Tribunal held that the company ought to have leant over backwards to help Mr Sharp. One member, dissenting, argued Mr Sharp should have again visited the welfare officer. The Employment Appeal Tribunal upheld the ruling, but only on the basis that the Tribunal had made findings of fact that were apparently not perverse. Judgment The Court of Appeal reversed the Tribunal and held that Mr Sharp had not been constructive dismissed at all. Lord Denning MR noted that there was a dispute about how to assess what was a constructive dismissal, partly as Megaw LJ in Turner v London Transport Executive 1977 ICR 952, 964, said that the test for whether there was a dismissal under what is now the Employment Rights Act 1996 section 95 1 c was the same as whether the dismissal was fair. But instead the ordinary contract test should apply so that a dismissal must first be established as follows. According to Lord Denning MR, Cquote If the employer is guilty of conduct which is a significant breach going to the root of the contract of employment, or which shows that the employer no longer intends to be bound by one or more of the essential terms of the contract, then the employee is entitled to treat himself as discharged from any further performance. Unbuffered memory is the opposite of registered memory . Registered memory is more stable, one clock cycle slower, and more expensive than unbuffered memory. Registered memory is usually used in servers and workstations, while normal PCs usually use unbuffered memory. Some high end hardware, such as servers, require the use of registered memory. In the past, registered memory was called buffered memory and unregistered memory was called unbuffered memory. Registered memory got renamed in common use, but unbuffered memory did not. Buffered Registered Memory has ECC memory ECC Error Correction Code aka error checking and correcting and is often but not always one clock cycle slower then unregistered memory. Unregistered memory comes in ECC and non ECC varieties. While ECC can cause a minor reduction in performance, it can prevent costly errors when running memory intensive software. For this reason it is often used in servers and workstations where up time and reliability outweigh the desire for a slight performance increases. Orphan date February 2009 Context date October 2009 Memory ProteXion , found in IBM xSeries servers, is a form of bit steering redundant bit steering . This technology uses redundant bits in a data packet to recover from a DIMM failure. Memory ProteXion is different from normal ECC Error detection and correction error correction in that it uses only 6 bits for ECC, leaving 2 bits behind. These 2 bits can be used to re route data from failed memory, much like hot spare on a raid. The ECC is used to reconstruct the data, and the extra bits to store it. Memory ProteXion, also known as redundant bit steering , is the technology behind using redundant bits in a data packet to provide backup in the event of a DIMM failure. One failure does not cause a predictive failure analysis to be issued on the DIMM, but 2 failures and moves will issue a PFA to inform the system administrator that a replacement is needed.
