Refimprove date June 2007 Milton historically, Milton of Colquhoun is a village in West Dunbartonshire , Scotland . It lies about 1 mile east of Dumbarton , on the A82 road A82 Glasgow Loch Lomond road and below the Overtoun Bridge . It previously had two primary schools, now closed, one on the long road up to Overtoun house and one on the main stretch of road to Glasgow. It is unknown when this second school on the route to Overtoun was in use or when it closed, though this was presumably in the late 19th century or early 20th century, as it is quite an old building and matches this period. Milton also has an SSPCA animal rescue centre. It also includes Dumbuck Quarry, which has removed a large part of Dumbuck hill. Its main claim to fame is that it was the home of Jackie Stewart , the racing driver. His family ran the Dumbuck Garage in the village. The total length of the river is approximately six miles and is very popular with salmon and sea trout anglers, trying to catch one of these migratory fish going up to Loch Lomond. The Vale of Leven is a collection of communities in the northern part of the river, whilst the town of Dumbarton sits at the southern end. Dumbarton Castle sits at the confluence of the river with the Clyde. The Leven is a relatively short river but is widely claimed to be the second fastest flowing river in Scotland, after the River Spey . ref A plaque beside the river in Balloch makes this claim. ref The river is crossed by nine bridges and two weirs. There is a path for pedestrians and cyclists near the river, which connects with a cycle path to Glasgow . No footnotes date May 2011 coord 56 00 47 N 4 35 00 W display title Balloch Castle is a building situated on the southern tip of Loch Lomond in the Balloch Country Park , in West Dunbartonshire , Scotland . Image BallochCastleScotland.jpg thumb right 320px Balloch Castle The castle was built as a residence in 1808 by the architect Robert Lugar at the order of John Buchanan of Ardoch, a partner in the Glasgow Ship Bank . This listed building is an early example of the Scottish baronial style popular in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The building s turrets and lancet window s are purely decorative. The new castle used stone from an earlier castle built near the current site by the Earl of Lennox in 1238 and occupied by the Lennox family until approximately 1390. Situated nearer the water than the present day castle, the earlier structure was abandoned in favour of stronghold on the island of Inchmurrin that was considered to be more secure against both the spread of disease and attack by hostile forces. All that remains of the original structure is a mound that once formed the moat . This site is given statutory protection under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979. The current castle grounds feature a walled garden with trees and shrubs, including the rhododendrons and azaleas that reach full bloom in late May and early June. The Countryside Ranger Service is based at the current castle. The ground floor has a visitors centre with facilities including a gift shop, car park, toilets, and tea room.
