Humboldt Sink is an intermittent dry lake bed, approximately 11 mi 18 km long, and 4 mi 6 km across, in northwestern Nevada in the United States . The body of water in the sink is known as Lake HumboldtHumboldt Lake . Humboldt Sink is located between the West HumboldtRange to the southeast and the Trinity Range to the northwest , on the border between Pershing County, Nevada Pershing and Churchill County, Nevada Churchill counties, approximately 50 mi 80 km northeast of Reno, Nevada Reno . It is fed from the northeast by the 330 mile 530 km long Humboldt River , the second longest river in the Great Basin of North America after the Bear River Utah Bear River . Interstate 80 Nevada Interstate 80 passes along the northwest side of the sink. The sink has no natural outlet. A channel connecting it with the Carson Sink was cut by the Nevada Department of Transportation in 1984 to prevent Interstate 80 and the town of Lovelock, Nevada Lovelock from flooding due to heavy snowfall in the preceding three years. This channel has been dry since 1986. The sink, along with the Carson Sink are remnants of the larger prehistoric Lake Lahontan that existed at the end of the last ice age , approximately 13,000 years ago. The sink is protected as part of Humboldt Wildlife Management Area . Due to foreshortening this formation has an extremely oblong appearance. The actual shape of the crater is an irregular circle, with a significant indentation along the southeastern rim where the prominent crater Barnard lunar crater Barnard intrudes. To the north northwest of Humboldt is the large crater Hecataeus crater Hecataeus . Phillips lunar crater Phillips is attached to the western rim. The rim of Humboldt is low, worn, and irregular in outline. The central peak forms a range on the crater floor. The floor surface contains a network of clefts forming a pattern of radial spokes and concentric arcs. There are also some dark patches located near the walls to the northeast, northwest, and southeast. There is a chain of craters leading from the northwest crater rim to a distance almost as long as the crater is wide. This formation is designated Catena Humboldt. Due to its location near the lunar limb, little detail was known about this crater until it was photographed by orbiting spacecraft.
