An Easter Sepulchre is a feature of England English Church building church architecture interior design . Description Image Sedilla.JPG thumb right 150px A straightforward undecorated example from St Marys Church, Grendon, Northants The Easter Sepulchre is an arched recess generally in the north wall of the chancel , in which from Good Friday to Easter day were deposited the crucifix and Body of Christ sacred elements in commemoration of Christ s Burial of Jesus entombment and Resurrection of Jesus resurrection . It was generally only a wooden erection, which was placed in a recess or on a tomb. Distribution The Easter Sepulchre is only found in England , the practice having been peculiar to the Sarum Rite . Usage The Easter Sepulchre contained the Blessed Sacrament of the altar, the Host liturgy Host . Real presence Believing in a very real way that Jesus is indeed in the Host, the Lord was taken from the Church tabernacle tabernacle of the Church on Good Friday evening and placed in a coffin like box. Candles were lit around the sepulchre, burial clothes adorned it, and parishioners stood guard until early Easter morning at the first Mass liturgy Mass . The Host was brought out, as Jesus came out of the tomb, and placed in the tabernacle in the center of the Church. ref Eamon Duffy, The Stripping of the Altars Traditional Religion in England 1400 1580 , Yale University Press, 1992. ref Surviving examples There are throughout England many fine examples in stone, some of which belong to the Decorated period , such as Cumbria Our Lady and St. Wilfrid s Roman Catholic Church, Warwick Bridge Devon Holcombe Burnell Dorset St Mary the Virgin s Church, Gillingham, Dorset Tarrant Hinton Herefordshire Ledbury Lincolnshire Navenby St Peter s Church St. Peter s Church, Navenby Heckington ..., Patrington References Reflist Cite EB1911 W1EC 1 wstitle Sepulchre, EasterEaster Category Church architecture Category Easter traditions Category Holy Week ... more details
The Easter People was a liberal policy document of the Roman Catholic Church in England and Wales. Background The ultimate inspiration for the work which gave rise to the document was the Second Vatican Council . The immediate occasion was a National Pastoral Congress of 2,000 men and women convoked by Archbishop Derek Worlock in Liverpool in 1980 to discuss a variety of potentially difficult issues. Work of the Congress Seven reports were prepared by committees and then approved in plenary session, covering issues from the admission of divorced or remarried Catholics to the sacraments, to the admission of non Catholics to communion, to artificial birth control, to social justice, to the ordination of women. These reports generally adopted a decisively liberal position. The seven reports were drawn together by a drafting committee chaired by Archbishop Worlock, and the result was published in 1980 under the title The Easter People . Results Reception of The Easter People was overwhelmed by the decision by Pope John Paul II at about the same time to make the first ever papal visit to Britain. Combined with the Pope s own conservative policies, this ensured that The Easter People had only a very muted impact. The cave is 185 metres long and may be visited during the summer months. It was first mentioned in the records around 1630. The present entrance was artificially created in 1905 in order to open it as a show cave for visitors. The Easter Cave is one of the last caves in Germany to be lit with carbide lamp s. Relatively high concentrations of manganese were found on the walls. The origin of the German name, Osterh hle , is not entirely clear, but it probably comes from the location of the cave on the Osterberg, a hill whose name in turn may possibly be connected with the German goddess of dawn, Ostara .
