  1. Microwave sounding unit

The Microwave sounding unit was the predecessor to the Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit . The MSU was first launched aboard the TIROS N satellite in late 1978 and provided global coverage from Pole to Pole . It carries a 4 channel microwave radiometer, operating between 50 and 60  GHz. Spatial resolution on the ground was 2.5 deg in longitude and latitude about 250  km circle . There were 9 differente MSUs launched the most recent one on NOAA 14. They provided measurements of the temperature of the troposhere and lower stratosphere until 1998, when the first AMSU was deployed. 1. Global horizontal sounding technique

The Global horizontal sounding technique GHOST program was an atmospheric field research project for gathering weather data with balloon aircraft balloon s. Unlike radiosonde balloons which collect vertical atmospheric sounding data over the release point during a relatively short ascent lasting a few minutes, horizontal sounding balloons stay aloft for much longer periods lasting several weeks or months, floating at a predetermined altitude. The GHOST program studied the movement of upper air currents and tested the feasibility of using horizontal sounding techniques to provide the necessary weather observations for very long range global scale numerical weather prediction . ref name AFE The GHOST project was part of the Global Atmospheric Measurements Program GAMP . 1. Echo Protocol

IPstack The Echo Protocol is a service in the Internet Protocol Suite defined in RFC 862. It was originally proposed for testing and measurement of round trip times Citation needed date November 2009 in IP networks. A host may connect to a server that supports the Echo Protocol using the Transmission Control Protocol TCP or the User Datagram Protocol UDP on the List of well known ports computing well known port number 7. The server sends back an identical copy of the data it received. The functionality of the Echo Protocol was superseded by the echo request of the Internet Control Message Protocol and the corresponding ping utility. Inetd implementation On UNIX like operating systems an echo server is built into the inetd daemon computer software daemon . The echo service is usually not enabled by default. 1. Radio acoustic sounding system

Image AK L W 03 62 16A.jpg thumb Radar wind profiler and RASS at the Alaska North Slope site in Barrow, Alaska A radio acoustic sounding system RASS is a system for measuring the atmospheric lapse rate using backscatter ing of radio waves from an Acoustics acoustic wave front to measure the speed of sound at various heights above the ground. This is possible because the compression and rarefaction of air by an acoustic wave changes the dielectric properties, producing partial reflection of the transmitted radar signal. ref cite book last Avouris first Nicholas title Environmental Informatics publisher Kluwer Academic location City year 1995 isbn 0792334450 ref From the speed of sound, the temperature of the air in the planetary boundary layer can be computed. ref cite book last Raghavan first Soundararajan title Radar Meteorology url http www.springer.com west home?SGWID 4 102 22 33611767 0 edition Vol. 27 series Atmospheric and Oceanographic Sciences Library year 2003 publisher Springer isbn 978 1 4020 1604 2 pages 442 ref The maximum altitude range of RASS systems is typically 750 meters, although observations have been reported up to 1.2 km in moist air. ref cite book last Kaimal first J. title Atmospheric Boundary Layer Flows publisher Oxford University Press location Oxford Oxfordshire year 1994 pages 245 isbn 0195062396 ref Principle The principle of operation behind RASS is as follows Bragg s law Bragg scattering occurs when Acoustics acoustic energy i.e., sound is transmitted into the vertical beam of a radar such that the wavelength of the acoustic signal matches the half wavelength of the radar. As the frequency of the acoustic signal is varied, strongly enhanced scattering of the radar signal occurs when the Bragg match takes place. When this occurs, the Doppler effect Doppler shift of the radar signal produced by the Bragg scattering can be determined, as well as the atmospheric vertical velocity. Thus, the speed of sound as a function of altitude can be ...   more details
