The EdinburghInternational Television Festival , founded in 1976, is held annually over the British August bank holiday weekend at the EdinburghInternational Conference Centre . Featuring prominent television industry voices and sessions covering pertinent issues facing the future of broadcasting, the festival is best known for its keynote address the James MacTaggart Memorial Lecture. This was named in honour of the writer, producer and director who died in 1974. The EdinburghInternational is an annual bonspiel , or curling tournament, that takes place in late November at the Murrayfield Curling Club in Edinburgh , Scotland . The tournament is held in a round robin format. History The tournament was started in 1922 as the Worlds Curling Championship , an open competition between Scottish curlers held at the Haymarket Ice Rink. The tournament was renamed the EdinburghInternational Curling Championship in 1975 in order for the World Curling Federation International Curling Federation to reserve the name World Curling Championship for the World Curling Championships Air Canada Silver Broom , the men s world curling championship at the time. It became an invitational tournament, inviting the semifinalists of the same year s World Championships, and moved venues to the Murrayfield Curling Rink. A period of decreased interest in the tournament led to the event s relegation from a highly respected international tournament to a domestic circuit tournament. Location The centre is at the heart of the masterplanned Exchange District in the west end of the city, and was designed by the architect Sir Terry Farrell , who ran the project from his Edinburgh office, opened to manage this project and other work in the Exchange. Construction on the EICC began in March 1993 and the centre opened in 1995. It caters to around 200,000 delegates every year and generates in excess of 60m in revenue for the City of Edinburgh . Notable events In 1999 the annual General Assembly of the Church of Scotland was held in the EICC. The Church s General Assembly Hall of the Church of Scotland Assembly Hall was being used by the Scottish Parliament at the time. The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting 1997 CHOGM was held in the EICC.
