Edme Jeaurat 1688 1738 was a French engraver from Vermenton , near Auxerre . Jeaurat was the son of an engraver and the elder brother of Etienne Jeaurat . His father took young Edme to Paris and apprenticed him to Bernard Picart . After working there many years, Jeaurat moved to the Netherlands , where he made his living producing engravings of the great paintings in Amsterdam and The Hague , while studying Dutch painting. Upon his return to Paris, he was reunited with his brother, whom he had not seen in many years. He began engraving Etienne s paintings and became known for his accurate work. Jeaurat was also employed by Pierre Crozat to engrave pictures for his famous collection. In 1722 in Paris, he married Marie Charlotte Le Clerc, the sister of the artist Louis August le Clerc Le Clerc , and many of his engravings are of the religious pictures painted by his brother in law. He had two sons, Nicholas Henry, a painter, usually known as Jeaurat de Bertry or Berty, and Edme S bastien Jeaurat Edme S bastien , who devoted himself to science. There is a fine collection of Edme Jeaurat s engravings in the British Museum , and they can also be studied in the Biblioth que Nationale in Paris. His finest work is said to be Achilles discovered among the Daughters of Lycomedes from 1713, and he also made engravings of works by Poussin , Paolo Veronese Veronese , and Watteau . He was a pupil of Augustin Pajou , and in 1788 he won the Prix de Rome . From 1788 to 1793, he lived in Italy, after which he returned to his native France, in the hope a commission from the National Convention during the French Revolution . However he secured no such commission, and began producing small statuettes and medallions for sale. It was Georges Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon Buffon who engaged this cousin of Louis Jean Marie Daubenton , Edm Louis, to supervise the colored illustrations for the Histoire naturelle 1749 89 . The Planches enlumin es started to appear in 1765 and finally counted 1,008 plates, all engraved by Fran ois Nicolas Martinet 1731 90 , and all painted by hand. The Paris ian publisher Charles Joseph Panckoucke Panckoucke published a version without text between 1765 and 1783. More than 80 artists took part in the realization of the original paintings. 973 plates relate to bird s others illustrate especially butterflies but also other insects , corals , etc. The illustrations were not very successful, but they allow a rather good determination of the illustrated species, some of them now extinct. He studies at the College of Auxerre then goes to Paris in order to do his medical education. He defends his thesis in 1777 1778 and becomes doctor at the age of 24. He begins his career in 1778 at the hospital of Charity. The next year, he becomes doctor of the Count of Provence . Suspected in 1793, he is jailed but soon released thanks to his wife and to his friend the surgeon Dubois . In 1794, he is chief medical officer of the army of the Alps where he has to face an epidemic of Typhus. When he returns to Paris, he narrowly misses to be arrested by the French Directory Directory . This time, he owes his freedom to Talleyrand . He meets Napoleon I of France Napoleon Bonaparte during this period and the two men become friends. But their relation falls back when Bourdois refuses to participate in the Campaigns of 1796 in the French Revolutionary Wars Campaign of Italy . They will not meet again before 1811.
