    About the Italian sculptor the fascist politician Dino Alfieri Edoardo Alfieri Foggia , Italy, 1913 &ndash Sanremo , Italy, 1998 was an Italy Italian sculpture sculptor . Although he was born at Foggia in southern Italy, his family was of Piedmont Piemontese origin and soon moved to Genoa , where he spent his childhood. He studied art at the school of Guido Galletti at Genoa and then, from 1932 to 1936, continued his studies at the Pinacoteca di Brera Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan under Francesco Messina. Already at the age of sixteen he won a first prize for his artwork at an exhibition in Genoa. In the 1930s, he was a member of the futurism futurist group Synthesis . After World War II , he held a post as a lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts of Genoa until 1969. Alfieri presented his work several times at the Venice Biennale Biennale of Venice in 1940, 1948, 1950, and in 1956 even in a dedicated hall. His work has been characterized as oscillating between avant garde and traditional. Besides expressionism expressionist works such as the Dagna grave at the cemetery of Staglieno, he also did traditional sculptures like the statue of Christopher Columbus that was given as gift to the city of Columbus, Ohio in the United States in 1955. Some of his works are abstract, for instance the Mele grave at Monumental Cemetery of Staglieno Staglieno , or the Relief bas relief Furor Mathematicus .     Edoardo Bassini April 14, 1844 &ndash July 19, 1924 was an Italian surgeon born in Pavia . In 1866 he received his medical degree from the University of Pavia , and afterwards joined the Italian Unification movement as an infantry soldier under Giuseppe Garibaldi 1807 1882 . In 1867 he was seriously wounded and taken prisoner. After his release and recovery, he traveled throughout Europe, furthering his medical studies. He learned surgical procedures in Vienna under Theodor Billroth 1829 1894 , in Berlin under Bernhard von Langenbeck 1810 1887 , and in Munich with Johann Nepomuk von Nussbaum 1829 1890 . He also visited London , where he met with Thomas Spencer Wells 1818 1897 and Joseph Lister, 1st Baron Lister Joseph Lister 1827 1912 . Afterwards, he was in charge of the surgical department at the hospital La Spezia, and in 1878 became a lecturer in surgery at Parma . In 1882 he became head of surgical pathology at the University of Padua , and later succeeded Tito Vanzetti 1809 1888 as the chair of clinical surgery. Bassini is remembered for his operative techniques regarding inguinal hernia repair. In 1884 Bassini introduced a surgical procedure that allowed for reconstruction of the inguinal canal and restoration of the patient s anatomy following the removal of the hernia l sac. Biography Scarfoglio was born in Paganica , in the Abruzzi region of Italy , but lived and worked in Naples much of his life. As a writer of fiction, his early reputation rests on the novella The Trial of Phryne , published in 1884, a retelling set in contemporary small town Italy of the trial of Phryne, a Greek courtesan from the fourth century, BCE. In Scarfoglio s version, a young woman, Mariantonia, guilty of murder, is acquitted simply because she is beautiful. Scarfoglio s tale is well known even to Italians who have not actually read the novella , since it was the basis for an episode in Alessandro Blasetti s popular 1952 film Altri tempi Other Times , starring Gina Lollobrigida as Phryne Mariantonia.
