    No footnotes date January 2011 npov date March 2012 Edward Earl Johnson 1961 &ndash May 20, 1987 was a man convicted and executed by the U.S. state of Mississippi for the murder of a policeman, J.T. Trest and the sexual assault of a 69 year old woman, Sally Franklin. Throughout his eight years on death row he continued to plead his innocence. Case His case came to international attention when he was featured in the BBC documentary Fourteen Days In May . Broadcast in 1987, the documentary showed the last two weeks of Johnson s life. It starts on May 6, the day that Johnson learns the date of his execution. In interviews he says that his confession was made under duress, with police threatening him with death. The book, Life on Death Row Thomas, 1991 details the events leading up to and following the Johnson trial. Thomas shows the key witness for the prosecution to be unreliable, changing her story and identification of her assailant several times at the time of the event and in subsequent questioning. Execution In spite of British people British lawyer Clive Stafford Smith s attempts for a reprieve, Edward was executed the documentary team were given access to him until minutes before the sentence was carried out . A follow up documentary by Stafford Smith claimed to prove conclusively that Johnson was innocent and had been framed. He was pronounced dead at 12 06 a.m. on May 20, 1987 after being put to death in the gas chamber of what was then called Mississippi State Penitentiary Parchman Prison Farm . It was the second execution by the state of Mississippi since the Gregg v. Georgia decision and the 72nd overall in the United States.     Edward Digby, 2nd Earl Digby 6 January 1773 &ndash 12 May 1856 , known as Viscount Coleshill from 1790 to 1793, was a United Kingdom British peer. Digby was the eldest son of Henry Digby, 1st Earl Digby , and Mary Knowler. He succeeded his father in the earldom in 1793 and was able to take his seat in the House of Lords on his twenty first birthday the following year. Lord Digby is most notable for serving as Lord Lieutenant of Dorset for nearly fifty years, from 1808 to 1856. He never married and on his death in May 1856, aged 83, the viscountcy and earldom became extinct. He was styled Viscount Hinchingbrooke from 1660 until his accession in 1672. He married Lady Anne Boyle, daughter of Richard Boyle, 2nd Earl of Cork and Elizabeth Clifford, 2nd Baroness Clifford . They had three children Edward Montagu, 3rd Earl of Sandwich , Richard Montagu and Elizabeth Montagu. In 1681, he was to be appointed Lord Lieutenant of Huntingdonshire upon his return from abroad, but he never took up the office, which was exercised successively by Robert Bruce, 1st Earl of Ailesbury and Thomas Bruce, 2nd Earl of Ailesbury . On 6 June 1573, he married Isabel Holcroft, and they had one child, Elizabeth Manners, 16th Baroness de Ros Elizabeth , born in January 1575. The Earl died on Good Friday at Puddle Wharf in London , but was brought home for burial. The Earldom of Rutland and Barony of Manners went to his brother John Manners, 4th Earl of Rutland John Manners , but the Barony of de Ros went to his daughter. At Bottesford, Leicestershire Bottesford Church in Leicestershire is the tomb commemorating the third Earl and his wife. It was created by Gerard Johanssen of Southwark, a famous Flemish craftsman. Earl Edward lies on a mat, wearing full plate armour. Instead of a gorget protecting his throat he wears a ruff clothing ruff . He wears the Order of the Garter on his left leg. His coronet has disappeared and at his feet is a decorated bull crest. He succeeded his mother to become Baron Clifton in 1722 and, in 1728, succeeded his father as Earl of Darnley . He was a Grand Master of Freemasons 1737 to 1738 , a Fellow of the Royal Society 1737 to 1738 and in 1742 was made a Lord of the Bedchamber to the Prince of Wales a position that he held until his death. He was one of the British Whig Party Whigs who, under the auspices of William Pulteney, 1st Earl of Bath , opposed Robert Walpole s office. He never married, but seems to have been the lover of the popular Irish actress Margaret Woffington . According to Westminster Abbey s Funeral Book and Burke s Peerage he died at the family seat Cobham Hall and was buried at Westminster Abbey on 1 August 1747, aged 31.
