Unreferenced date January 2012 EdwardFitzgerald 1820 19 March 1896 was an Australian brewer and founder of the Castlemaine Brewery. Edward was born in 1820 in Galway to parents Francis Fitzgerald and Eleanor Joyes. His family owned and operated a distillery establishment at Nun s Island, Galway. In 1854 EdwardFitzgerald migrated to Australia during the Victorian gold rush and established a brewery in the gold field town of Castlemaine, Victoria Castlemaine . In 1859 his brother Nicholas Fitzgerald politician Nicholas Fitzgerald emigrated to Australia and joined him in the brewery business. By 1871 the name Castlemaine Brewery had been adopted, in 1875 the brothers opened a brewery in South Melbourne, and in 1885 the enterprise was turned in to a public company. Breweries were opened right across the country and the brothers were involved in the establishment of the Castlemaine Perkins Castlemaine Perkins brewery in Brisbane which is home of the XXXX brand and is still brewing to this day. Fitzgerald, born at Newpark, County Wexford , about 1770, was a country gentleman of considerable means. At the breaking out of the insurrection in 1798 he was confined in Wexford gaol on suspicion, but on being released by the populace, commanded in some of the engagements that took place in different parts of the county during the occupation of the town, exhibiting, it is said, far better generalship than the commander in chief, Bagenal Beauchamp Harvey q. v. Madden commends his humanity to the prisoners that fell into his hands at Gorey. At the Battle of Arklow he commanded the Shemalier gunsmen. He afterwards joined in the expedition against Hacketstown, and surrendered upon terms to General Wilford in the middle of July. With Garrett, Byrne, and others he was detained in custody in Dublin until the ensuing year, when he was permitted to reside in England. He was, however, re arrested on 25 March 1800, imprisoned for a while, and then allowed to retire to Hamburg, where he died in 1807. He was the eldest son of George Villiers, 4th Viscount Grandison and his wife Mary, daughter of Francis Leigh, 1st Earl of Chichester . In 1677 he married the heiress Katherine FitzGerald, Viscountess Grandison Katherine FitzGerald , through whom he gained substantial property in County Waterford . He adopted the surname of FitzGerald to reflect this inheritance. Their children included John FitzGerald Villiers, 1st Earl of Grandison John , later 5th Viscount and 1st Earl Grandison William Mary, who married Brigadier General William Steuart d. 1736 , nephew of her stepfather Harriet, who married Robert Pitt and was the mother of William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham .
