VictorEdward Galway 24 May 1894&mdash 9 July 1960 was a New Zealand music academic, organist , Conducting conductor and composer . Biography Victor Galway was born in Colchester , Essex , England . He attended Ayr Academy and studied organ under Frederick Ely. In 1911 he emigrated with his family to Australia , where he studied music at the University of Melbourne . He graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in 1916, and in 1923 became the university s first student to complete the requirements for the Doctor of Music degree. In 1919 Galway moved to Dunedin , New Zealand , to take up the position of organist and choirmaster at First Church of Otago. He became the first lecturer in music at the University of Otago in 1925, and the first Blair Professor of Music at the university in 1939. That year he also left his post at First Church to become organist and choirmaster at St. Paul s Cathedral, Dunedin . Galway also served as conductor of the City of Dunedin Choir Dunedin Choral Society , conductor of the Otago University Musical Society, and president of the Otago Society of Musicians. Most of his compositions were for choral music, and several of his pieces were published by Oxford University Press. Galway suffered a stroke in 1954 and shortly afterwards retired from the University of Otago. Appleton Appleton is a heavily eroded moon lunar Impact crater crater that lies in the northern sphere hemisphere on the Far side Moon far side of the Moon . To the northwest are the craters Von Neumann crater Von Neumann and Campbell lunar crater Campbel . The smaller Golovin crater Golovin lies to the northeast, while further to the southwest is the Mare Moscoviense . The crater wall and interior have been heavily eroded by many subsequent impacts, leaving the features rounded and irregular. A pair of craters lie across the southwestern rim, and two small craterlets lie along the eastern rim. The interior floor is irregular and contains many tiny craterlets. Appleton lies between a pair of satellite craters that are located on opposite sides of the rim, forming a triple formation. Appleton R is located just to the west southwest, and contains another crater just inside its north rim. On the opposite side of Appleton is Appleton D, a comparably sized formation to Appleton R. Appleton moved to United Kingdom Britain in the 1920s, and he played in dance bands both there and on the Continent through the end of the decade. In 1934 he played in Leslie Thompson musician Leslie Thompson s Emperors of Jazz, and was leading his own band by 1937 he also worked with Jiver Hutchinson and Cyril Blake in the second half of the decade.
