The Hatshepsut problem was a major issue in late 19th century and early 20th century Egyptology , centering on confusion and disagreement on the order of succession of early Eighteenth dynasty of Egypt 18th dynasty pharaohs . The dilemma takes its name from confusion over the chronology of the rule of Queen Hatshepsut and Thutmose I, II, and III. ref cite web first David last Bediz title The Story of Hatshepsut url http www.bediz.com hatshep story.html accessdate 2007 06 27 ref In its day, the problem was controversial enough to cause academic feuds between leading Egyptologists and created perceptions about the early Thutmosid family that persisted well in to the 20th century, the influence of which still can be found in more recent works. Chronology wise, the Hatshepsut problem was largely cleared up in the late 20th century, as more information about her and her reign was uncovered. Chronological synchronism is an event which links two chronology chronologies . It is used for example in Egyptology to ground the Egyptian chronology . The main types of chronological synchronism are synchronisms with other historical chronologies, and synchronisms with precisely datable astronomical events. Synchronisms with other chronologies often rely on some form of recorded communication between regions. For example in Egyptology, the earliest such synchronisms appear in the 15th century BC, during the Amarna Period , when we have a considerable quantity of diplomatic correspondence between the Egyptian Kings Amenhotep III and Akhenaten , and various Near Eastern monarchs, linking Egyptian chronology with other Near Eastern chronologies. Astronomical synchronisms rely on precise identification of astronomical events recorded in the historical record. The best known of these is the Sothic cycle , and careful study of this led Richard Anthony Parker Richard A. Parker to argue that the dates of Egypt s Twelfth dynasty of Egypt Twelfth dynasty could be fixed with absolute precision. ref Set forth in Excursus C The Twelfth dynasty in his The Calendars of ancient Egypt Chicago University Press, 1950 . ref More recent research has eroded this confidence, questioning many of the assumptions used with the Sothic Cycle, and as a result experts have moved away from relying on this Cycle. ref One example is Patrick O Mara, Censorinus, the Sothic Cycle, and calendar year one in ancient Egypt the Epistological problem , Journal of Near Eastern studies , 62 2003 , pp. 17 26. ref References references Category Chronology ... more details
