  1. A (musical note)

Unreferenced date March 2010 La or A is the sixth note of the solf ge . A is generally used as a standard for tuning. When the orchestra tunes, the oboe plays an A and the rest of the instruments tune to match that pitch. Every string instrument in the orchestra has an A string, from which each player can tune the rest of their instrument. A is also used in combination with a number e.g. A 440 to label the pitch standard. The number designates the hertz cycles per second of sound waves . A lower number equals a lower pitch. By an international treaty signed in 1939, modern pitch is standardized at A440 pitch standard A 440 . However, tuning has varied over time, geographical region, or instrument maker. In 17th century Europe , tunings ranged from about A 374 to A 403, approximately two to three semitone s below A 440. Historical examples exist of instruments, tuning forks, or standards ranging from A 309 to A 455.3, a difference of almost six semitones Citation needed date April 2010 . Although the official standard today is A 440, some orchestral groups and chamber groups prefer to tune a little higher, at A 442 or even A 444. Baroque pitch is usually cited as A 415, which is a semitone lower than modern pitch. A0 is the lowest note on the standard piano . The octaves follow A1, A2, etc.. A7 is a few pitches lower than eighth octave C C8 , the highest note on the standard piano. The note A is not considered to be a certain milestone or mark to hit with voice as, for example, Tenor C is, but it can be extremely demanding in certain octave s. 1. Circular note

A circular note is a document request by a bank to its foreign correspondents to pay a specified sum of money to a named person. The person in whose favour a circular note is issued is furnished with a letter containing the signature of an official of the bank and the person named called a letter of indication, which is usually referred to in the circular note, and must be produced on presentation of the note. Circular notes are generally issued against a payment of cash to the amount of the notes, but the notes need not necessarily be cashed, but may be returned to the banker in exchange for the amount for which they were originally issued. A forged signature on a circular note conveys no right, and as it is the duty of the payer to see that payment is made to the proper person, he cannot recover the amount of a forged note from the banker who issued the note. 1. Note head

Refimprove date March 2011 Image Parts of a note.svg right 150px thumb Parts of the note In music, a note head is the elliptical part of a note . Noteheads may be coloured completely black or white, indicating the note value i.e., rhythmic duration . In a whole note , the note head is the only component of the note. Shorter note values attach a stem music stem to the note head, and possibly beam music beam s or flags. The longer double whole note can be written with vertical lines surrounding it, two attached note heads, or a rectangular note head. Citation needed date March 2011 Image Punctum1.gif right 50px thumb Punctum History Note heads ultimately derive from the neume s used to notate Gregorian chant . The punctum, seen at right, is the simplest of the shapes and most clearly anticipates the modern note head. When placed on a clef , the position of a note head indicated the relative frequency of a note. The development of different colors of note heads, and the use of it to indicate rhythmic values, was the use of white mensural notation , adopted around 1450. Citation needed date March 2011 Franco of Cologne , ancient composer and music theorist, codified a system of rhythm notation. He explained this system in his work, Ars Cantus Mensurabilis, which means The Art of Measurable Music circa 1280. In this system, the relative duration of notes was indicated by the note shapes. The note heads were rectangles, squares, or diamonds depending on the note length. This system ... of the Franconian and Ars Nova style with open note heads. During the Renaissance, composers added shorter note durations that used filled in note heads. Near the end of the 16th century, the square or diamond shaped notes changed to the round note heads that are used today. ref Burkholder, J.P. ... & Company. 1. Note nere

Note nere English black note was a style of Madrigal music madrigal composition, which used shorter note values than usual and had more black note heads. ref Don Michael Randel The Harvard dictionary of music p480 2003 ref The style was introduced around 1540, and had a short vogue among composers publishing in Venice including Costanzo Festa , Giaches de Wert , Cipriano di Rore and many minor composers, such as in the First Book 1548 of Giandomenico Martoretta . The first note nere madrigals had appeared, unannounced, in 1538, in the music for the wedding of Cosimo de Medici , where four of seven canzone by Corteccia are note nere, and 1539 with two of the madrigals in Arcadelt s Fourth Book. The first publication to establish the pattern that title pages of the collections were often marked as madrigali a note nere , in contrast to conventional but unstated note bianche , was Claudio Veggio s book of 1540 which was marked misura a breve the same idea. Alfred Einstein interpreted this as short measure . The time signature of note nere madrigals was music common time rather than music cut time now the sign for alla breve . Pietro Aron , in his Lucidario 1545 , states what would appear evident that shorter black notes in music common time should have evened out to longer white notes in music cut time , making the change in the notation merely cosmetic, but Glareanus noted that there was no strict proportion between C and C with a vertical slash. The common conclusion of scholars is that the notation was meant to signal contrast between very fast and very slow beats as part of the chromatic style. ref James Haar,Paul Edward Corneilson The science and art of Renaissance music Chapter 9 The Note Nere Madrigal. ref References reflist Category Madrigals music stub ...   more details
