Two conical peaks were sighted in the area from the USS Peacock 1828 Peacock on January 16, 1840 by Passed Midshipmen Henry Eld and William Reynolds naval officer William Reynolds of the United States Exploring Expedition USEE 1838 42 . The southeastern peak was named for Eld by USEE leader Lieutenant Charles Wilkes . In 1959 Phillip Law of the Australian National Antarctic Research Expedition made investigations of features in this area. George Eld 1791 1862 , was an English antiquary . Life Eld was born in Coventry in 1791. He carried on business successively as a miller , a silk dealer, and a dyer he was also for twenty years editor of the Coventry Standard . He was the last mayor of Coventry 1834 5 before the passing of the Municipal Reform Act , and, besides filling other public offices, an alderman of the reformed corporation till his death. During his mayoralty he restored the interior of the mayoresses parlour an architectural relic of the fourteenth century and throughout his life he preserved local antiquities. He drew old buildings and other memorials of the past. He died at Coventry on 22 May 1862, in his seventy first year. Electroluminescent Displays ELD s are a type of Flat panel display created by sandwiching a layer of electroluminescent material such as GaAs between two layers of conductors. When current flows, the layer of material emits radiation in the form of visible light. Electroluminescence EL is an optical and electrical phenomenon where a material emits light in response to an electric current passed through it, or to a strong electric field. Mechanism EL works by exciting atom s by passing an electric current through them, causing them to emit photon s. By varying the material being excited, the colour of the light emitted can be changed. The actual ELD is constructed using flat, opacity optics opaque electrode strips running parallel to each other, covered by a layer of electroluminescent material, followed by another layer of electrodes, running perpendicular to the bottom layer. This top layer must be transparent in order to let light escape. At each intersection, the material lights, creating a pixel. Orphan date April 2011 Ringgold Knoll coor dm 69 20 S 157 39 E is a mountain 9 nautical miles 17 km south of Archer Point on the east side of Matusevich Glacier . On January 16 , 1840 , Lieutenant Commandant Cadwalader Ringgold on the Porpoise, one of the ships of the United States Exploring Expedition 1838 42 under Wilkes, sighted a large dark mountain in this direction. It was named Ringgold s Knoll on the chart by Wilkes. In 1959 Phillip Law of ANARE Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions made an investigation of features in the area. It was not possible to identify the feature sighted by Ringgold, but this mountain is in proper relationship to nearby Reynolds Peak and Eld Peak as indicated on Wilkes chart.
