  1. Document Definition Markup Language

notability date October 2011 primary sources date October 2011 Document Definition Markup Language DDML is an XML schema language proposed in 1999 by various contributors from the xml dev electronic mailing list . It was published only as a W3C Note, not a Recommendation, and never found favor with developers. DDML began as XSchema , a reformulation of XML Document Type Definition DTD s as full XML documents, so that elements and attributes, rather than declarations, could be used to describe a schema. As development continued, the name was changed to DDML, reflecting a shift away from the goal of replicating all DTD functionality, in order to concentrate on providing a robust framework for describing basic element attribute hierarchy. DDML offered no datatype s or functionality beyond what DTDs already provided, so there was not much advantage to using DDML instead of DTDs. DDML did, however, inform the development of the next generation of XML based schema languages, including the more successful XML Schema W3C XML Schema and RELAX NG . 1. Living document

A living document or dynamic document is a document which may be continually edited and updated by either a limited or unrestricted group. A simple example of a living document is an article in Wikipedia , in contrast to dead or static documents, such as an article in a single edition of the Encyclop dia Britannica . A living document may or may not have a framework for updates, changes, or adjustments. This type of document without proper context can change away from its original purpose through multiple uncontrolled edits. This is different than an evergreen document that is written in a way that is relevant to a specific audience over a long period of time. This relevance comes from a universal acceptance or application of document contents. However, a living document may evolve through updates, be expanded as needed, and serve a different purpose over time. Living documents are changed through revisions that may or may not reference previous iterative changes. The rate of document decay depends on the structure of the original document, or original intent of such document, or guidelines for modifying such document. In business In business a living document may fall under corporate change management or be shared among a team. It may start as a draft work that at some time graduates into general acceptance, or may originate as part of a formal documentation process. Regardless of the degree of formality, a living document needs rules or guidelines for its modification. Such guidelines allow and should ideally encourage the document s evolution over time. It is in this sense of growth that the document can be thought of as living. In pastoral Theology In pastoral Theology the living document refers to an individual person. Unreferenced date December 2009 The lexical definition of a term, also known as the dictionary definition, is the Meaning linguistic meaning of the term in common usage. As its other name implies, this is the sort of definition one is likely to find in the dictionary. A lexical definition is usually the type expected from a request for definition, and it is generally expected that such a definition will be stated as simply as possible in order to convey information to the widest audience. Note that a lexical definition is descriptive , reporting actual usage within speakers of a language , and changes with changing usage of the term, rather than prescriptive , which would be to stick with a version regarded as correct regardless of drift in accepted meaning. They tend to be inclusive, attempting to capture everything the term is used to refer to, and as such are often too vague for many purposes. When the breadth or vagueness of a lexical definition is unacceptable, a precising definition or a stipulative definition is often used. Words can be classified as lexical or nonlexical. An explicit listing of the extension, which is only possible for finite sets and only practical for relatively small sets, is a type of enumerative definition . Extensional definitions are used when listing examples would give more applicable information than other types of definition , and where listing the members of a set mathematics set tells the questioner enough about the nature of that set. 1. Precising definition

A precising definition is a definition that extends the lexical definition of a term for a specific purpose by including additional criteria that narrow down the set of things meeting the definition. For example, a dictionary may define the term student as 1. anyone attending an educational institution of any type, or 2. anyone who studies something. However, a movie theater may propose a precising definition for the word student of any person under the age of 18 enrolled in a local school in order to determine who is eligible to receive discounted tickets. Precising definitions are generally used in contexts where vagueness is unacceptable many law legal definitions are precising definitions, as are company policies. This type of definition is useful in preventing disputes that arise from the involved parties using different definitions of the term in question. A precising definition is intended to make a vague word more precise so that the word s meaning is not left to the interpretation of the reader or listener. Here is an example From a class syllabus Class participation means attending class, listening attentively, answering and asking questions, and participating in class discussions. This is similar to a stipulative definition , but differs in that a stipulative definition may contradict the lexical definition, while a precising definition does not.
