EliezerbenSamuel of Verona lived about the beginning of the thirteenth century was an Italian Jewish tosafist . He was a disciple of Rabbi Isaac the elder , of Dampierre , and grandfather of the philosopher and physician Hillel of Forli . He had sanctioned the second marriage of a young woman whose husband had probably, though not certainly, perished by shipwreck. But Eliezerben Joel ha Levi refused to endorse the permission, and a protracted controversy resulted, into which other rabbis were drawn. EliezerbenSamuel is often quoted on Biblical and halakic questions. Mordecai, in speaking of Eliezer, calls him Eliezer of Verdun, though undoubtedly meaning Verona. Orphan date May 2011 Eliezerben Isaac ben Arhah was a Palestinian rabbi in Hebron from about 1615 until his death in 1652. He also resided for some time in Safed and Gaza . His responsa , containing questions from all over Palestine and beyond, demonstrate the wide acceptance of his authority. They also reveal much detail about the lives of the Jews living in the Land of Israel at the time. Eliezer Lazer ben Elijah Ashkenazi 1512 December 13, 1585 lang he was a Talmud ist, rabbi , physician, and many sided scholar. Though of a Jews of Germany German family according to some, the relative of Joseph Colon see Marco Mortara , Indice Alfabetico, s.v. , he was probably born in the Levant , and received his Talmudic education under Joseph Taitazak in Salonica . Ashkenazi first became rabbi in Egypt 1538 60, probably at Fostat , where, by his learning and wealth, he became widely known. Compelled by circumstances doubtless of a political nature to leave Egypt, he went to Cyprus , remaining there for two years as rabbi at Famagusta . A desire to visit foreign lands and to observe foreign peoples impelled him to give up this position and to travel. He went first to Venice , but a disagreement with the rabbis Me r Padua and his son Judah Katzenellenbogen caused him to leave the city and in the same year to take up his residence at Prague 1561 . Here either because he was a rabbi, or, at all events, because he was a leading authority his was the first signature appended to the constitution of the burial society of the congregation. After leaving Bohemia and proceeding eastward as far as the Crimea , Ashkenazi returned to Italy , not before 1570. While rabbi of Cremona he published there 1576 his work, Yosef Lekah Increases Learning compare Prov. i. 5 , dedicated to Joseph Nasi, duke of Naxos, which was several times reprinted. Nathan benEliezer ha Me ati ref Nathan of Cento, Nathan da Cento. ref was an Italian Jewish translator, the earliest known member of the Ha Me ati family that flourished at Rome in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. He was called the Prince of Translators and the Italian Tibbonide . Life He lived in Rome from 1279 to 1283. His native place seems to have been Cento , hence his name Me ati, which is the Hebrew equivalent of Cento 100 . After acquiring many languages during long wanderings, he settled at Rome, where he translated scientific and especially medical works from Arabic into Hebrew. This was to take the place, as he declared, of the medical literature of the Jews which had existed even at the time of Solomon but had been lost, and to silence the mockery of the Christians, who said that the Jews had no such literature. Judah benEliezer ha Levi Minz ca. 1405 1508 , also known as Mahari Minz , was the most prominent Italian rabbi of his time. He officiated as rabbi of Padua for forty seven years, during which time he had a great number of pupils, among whom were his son Abraham Minz , and the latter s son in law Meir Katzenellenbogen . In a quarrel he had with Elijah Delmedigo , he was supported by Elijah Mizrahi ref comp. Joseph Solomon Delmedigo , Matzref la Chokmah, p. 3b idem, Elim, p. 29 Mizrachchi, Responsa , No. 56. ref It appears from Solomon Luria s responsa ref No. 6 ref that Minz was the author of a number of ordinances takanot at Padua. According to Ghirondi , he was professor of philosophy at the University of Padua . Ghirondi further states that in recognition of Minz s services as professor, the authorities of the university placed his portrait, with an appreciative inscription, in the hall of the university, over the staircase. But it is very likely that Ghirondi confounded Minz with Elijah Delmedigo or Abraham de Balmes , both of whom lectured on philosophy before Christian audiences. In the sack of Padua soon after Minz s death almost all of his writings were destroyed. Hillel, witnessing Gerondi s sincere repentance for his behavior in the Maimonides controversy at Montpellier , himself began to study Maimonides religio philosophical works, of which he became one of the most enthusiastic admirers. Baruch benSamuel died April 25, 1221 , also called Baruch of Mainz to distinguish him from Baruch ben Isaac , was a Talmudist and prolific payye an , who flourished in Mainz at the beginning of the thirteenth century. He was a pupil of Moses ben Solomon ha Kohen of Mainz and of EliezerbenSamuel of Metz the judicial sentences of both of whom he frequently cites. Baruch was one of the most eminent German rabbis of his time, and one of the leading signatories of the Takkanot Shum . Several of his responsa have been preserved in the German collections most of them refer to the rabbinic civil law. His Sefer ha okmah Book of Wisdom , still extant in the time of Bezalel ben Abraham Ashkenazi , but now lost, appears also to have been largely legal in character. Early writers cite also a commentary by Baruch on the treatise Nedarim , which was lost at an early date. Of Baruch s poetical activity more is known. His penitential poems and dirges, as well as his hymns for the Sabbath and for weddings, which made him one of the most popular of the payye anim, were incorporated into the German and the Polish rituals. Baruch displays a great command of language the seli ot , in particular, being frequently characterized by genuine poetic fervor.
