It is located in the middle of Mennonite country with Old Order Mennonites and the fields to the north and south of the airport are often plowed using horses. When expedient, the farmers contract with others who have tractors and then the fields are plowed with tractors e.g. spring of 2011 was very wet and so using tractors when the fields were dry allowed the crops to be planted more quickly . For many years the Guelph Gliding and Soaring Association operated from this location but in 2008, their membership dropped off and with increased expenses, they folded the operation. Unfortunately a windstorm in the spring of 2008 took many of their sailplanes that were tied up on the field and made them into matchsticks, further hitting the assets of the club. One of the members planes was in a trailer that was not tied down and the trailer ended up being blown over the fence into the neighboring farmer s field. The site was selected partially due to its proximity to the Erie Railroad Erie Railway and the Northern Central Railway , which criss crossed in the midst of the city, making it a prime location for a Union Army training and muster point early in the Civil War. Most of the convert 30 acre m2 sing on Union installation, known as Camp Rathbun , fell into disuse as the war progressed, but the camp s Barracks 3 were converted into a military prison in the summer of 1864. The prison camp, in use from July 6, 1864, until the fall of 1865, was dubbed Hellmira by its inmates. Campaignbox Normandy During World War II , mission Elmira was the landing of a significant part of the U.S. 82nd Airborne Division 82nd Airborne Division s military glider glider train in American airborne landings in Normandy Normandy on the evening before 6 June 1944 as part of Operation Neptune , the assault phase of Operation Overlord . Mission composition and purpose Elmira consisted of 176 C 47 Skytrain troop carrier aircraft acting as glider tugs, 36 CG 4 Waco gliders, and 140 Airspeed Horsa Horsa gliders, divided into one serial of 26 and three serials of 50 tug glider combinations. One additional C 47, which had returned to base earlier in the day without dropping its stick of paratroopers, accompanied the last flight of the mission. The planned and briefed landing zone for the gliders was LZ W, located two miles 3 km southeast of Sainte M re glise , but a smaller landing zone had also been put in operation that morning north of the town on Drop Zone O. The W&E was organized in 1832 and ran between Williamsport, Pennsylvania and Elmira, New York . It was reorganized as the E&W in 1860, and operated its own property until 1863. The railroad originally ran north from Williamsport along Lycoming Creek as far as the village of Ralston, and was only extended beyond it to Elmira in 1854.
