Eloise Cemetery was the cemetery used by the Eloise hospital complex located in what was then Nankin Township and is now Westland, Michigan. The patients buried in the cemetery were from the Infirmary Division, the William P. Seymour General Hospital, the T.B. Sanitarium and the Eloise Hospital Psychiatric Division. Tuberculosis was the leading cause of death in the United States at the turn of the century, and a number of the deaths during that time period were from tuberculosis. The majority of burials were from the Infirmary Division which was the largest of the three divisions where up to 7,000 patients were housed. Most buried there are adult males, though there are women, a few infants and children. History The cemetery was purchased from Bishop Foley in 1892. It consisted of two acres of ground, and is now covered by an artificial lake . The bones were dug up in 1893 and reburied in the present county cemetery and to a nearby island. ref Keenan 1913 p. 70 ref About 7,100 people were buried in the Eloise cemetery between 1910 and 1948. Education Eloise Patricia Rallings Lewis was born in Pageland , South Carolina , in 1920. She was the fourth daughter of Dr. and Mrs. J. Monroe Rallings, a country medical practitioner and a college speech teacher, respectively. Lewis graduated from Pageland High School in 1936 and continued her education at Winthrop College in Rock Hill , South Caroliona. After two years, she transferred to Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee Nashville , Tennessee . She graduated from the hospital program there in 1941. Early eareer Lewis began her medical career as a faculty member of the Women s Medical College School of Nursing in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania . She served as an instructor and supervisor of medical surgical nursing there from 1941 to 1943.
