An otoacoustic emission OAE is a sound which is generated from within the inner ear . Having been predicted by Thomas Gold in 1948, its existence was first demonstrated experimentally by David Kemp hearing David Kemp in 1978 ref Kemp DT. Stimulated acoustic emissions from within the human auditory system. J Acoust Soc Am. 1978 64 1386 1391, doi 10.1121 1.382104 ref and otoacoustic emissions have since been shown to arise by a number of different cellular mechanisms within the inner ear . Fact date July 2008 Studies have shown that OAEs disappear after the inner ear has been damaged, so OAEs are often used in the laboratory and the clinic as a measure of inner ear health. Broadly speaking, there are two types of otoacoustic emissions spontaneous otoacoustic emissions SOAEs , which can occur without external stimulation, and evoked otoacoustic emissions EOAEs , which require an evoking Stimulus physiology stimulus . Mechanism of occurrence OAEs are considered to be related to the amplification function of the cochlea . In the absence of external stimulation, the activity of the cochlear amplifier increases, leading to the production of sound. Several lines of evidence suggest that, in mammals, outer hair cells are the elements that enhance cochlear sensitivity and frequency selectivity and hence act as the energy sources for amplification. One theory is that they act to increase the discriminability of signal variations in continuous noise by lowering the masking effect of its cochlear ampli cation. ref Lilaonitkul W, Guinan JJ Jr. 2009 . Two examples of isotopes which emit neutrons are helium 5 and beryllium 13 . However, the decay of helium 5 is also by definition a case of alpha decay. Many heavy isotopes, most notably californium 252 , emit neutrons among the products of a different radioactive decay process, spontaneous fission . Neutrons are absorbed and emitted in the process of nuclear fission , a nuclear chain reaction propagated by neutrons. A harmonic spectrum is a spectrum of an operator spectrum containing only frequency components whose frequency frequencies are whole number multiples of the fundamental frequency such frequencies are known as harmonic s. In other words, if math omega , math is the fundamental frequency, then a harmonic spectrum has the form math dots, 2 omega, omega, 0, omega, 2 omega, dots . math A standard result of Fourier analysis is that a function has a harmonic spectrum if and only if it is periodic function periodic . In stable homotopy theory , a branch of mathematics , the sphere spectrum S is the smallest nontrivial spectrum homotopy theory spectrum . It is the suspension spectrum of S sup 0 sup , i.e., a set of two points. Explicitly, the n th space in the sphere spectrum is the n dimensional sphere geometry sphere S sup n sup , and the structure maps from the suspension mathematics suspension of S sup n sup to S sup n 1 sup are the canonical homeomorphism s. In mathematics , a Dirac spectrum , named after Paul Dirac , is the spectrum of eigenvalue s of a Dirac operator on a Riemannian manifold with a spin structure . The isospectral problem for the Dirac spectrum asks whether two Riemannian spin manifolds have identical spectra. The Dirac spectrum depends on the spin structure in the sense that there exists a Riemannian manifold with two different spin structures that have different Dirac spectra. ref cite journal url http www.emis.de journals SC 2000 4 pdf smf sem cong 4 17 33.pdf title Dependence of the Dirac spectrum on the spin structure author Bar year 2000 ref See also Can you hear the shape of a drum?
