The film and story served as the inspiration for a 1998 music composition recording Enchanted Forest by Loren Connors and Suzanne Langille . Plot The hermit, Uncle John, communicates with animals and cares for the forest. He is at odds with a forester who wants to cut down all the trees, and wants any impediments like Uncle John and the boy removed. The child, Jackie, had been washed downstream after a train wreck in a storm. The mother, Anne, whose father owns the land, is told that the child must be dead, but she cannot quite believe it. When she visits her father, and walks in the forest, the boy catches sight of her, and she catches a glimpse of him as well. Through a series of interactions, the mother and child are reunited, the forest is saved, and Uncle John is able to stay. The Enchanted Doe is an Italian literary fairy tale written by Giambattista Basile in his 1634 work, the Pentamerone . Synopsis A king wished for a child to incline the gods toward him, he was charitable to beggars. When he had spent all his money this way without having a child, he shut himself up in a tower and shot at anyone who came near with a crossbow. A pilgrim came and told him that if the queen ate the heart of the sea dragon, she would have a child. The king had this done, and the queen gave birth to identical twin boys. One day she grew jealous of the younger, Canneloro, because the older, Fonzo, loved his brother better than her and found a place where Fonzo had been making bullets to go hunting but had left them to get something. She took one hot bullet mold and threw it at Canneloro, making an ugly wound, and would have thrown another, but Fonzo returned. Canneloro told him he had to leave but, at Fonzo s persuasion, stuck a dagger in the ground, opening a fountain he told his brother that he was well when it flowed clear, in troubles when it was turbid, and dead when it was dry. Synopsis A rich man s oldest two sons went out and saw the world for three years apiece, and came back. The foolish youngest son also wanted to go, and his father finally let him, expecting never to see him again. On the way, he saw men about to kill a dog, and asked them to give it to him instead they did. He acquired a cat and a snake by the same manner. The snake brought him to the king of snakes, telling him how he would have to explain his absence, but then the king would want to reward the son. He told him to ask for a watch, which, when he rubbed it, would give him whatever he wanted. He went home. Because he wore the same dirty clothing he set out in, his father flew into a rage. A few days later, he used the watch to make a house and invite his father to a feast there. Then he invited the king and the princess. The king was impressed by the marvels the son conjured to entertain them, and married the princess to him. Soon, because he was so foolish, his wife wearied of him. She learned of the watch, stole it, and fled. The son set out with the dog and cat. They saw an island with a house where the princess had fled and conjured up the house to live.
