  1. Conscription in the Netherlands

Unreferenced date July 2008 Conscription in the Netherlands lang nl dienstplicht was first employed in 1810 by France French occupying forces. Napoleon s brother Louis Bonaparte , who was Kingdom of Holland King of Holland from 1806 to 1810, had tried to introduce conscription a few years earlier, unsuccessfully. Every man aged 20 years or older had to enlist. By means of drawing lots it was decided who had to undertake service in the French army. It was possible to arrange a substitute against payment. Later on, conscription was used for all men over the age of 18. Postponement was possible, due to study, for example. Conscientious objectors could perform an alternative civilian service instead of military service . For various reasons, this forced military service was criticized at the end of the twentieth century. Since the Cold War was over, so was the direct threat of a war. Instead, the Dutch army was employed in more and more peacekeeping operations. The complexity and danger of these missions made the use of conscripts controversial. Furthermore the conscription system was thought to be unfair as only men were drafted. In the European part of Netherlands, compulsory attendance has been officially suspended since 1 May 1997. 1. Conscription crisis

Unreferenced date December 2009 Conscription A conscription crisis is a public dispute about a policy of conscription , or mandatory service in the military, also known as a draft . A dispute can become a crisis when submission to military service becomes highly controversial and popular revolt ensues. From the point of view of military officials, the crisis is one of supply where they may claim to lack enough troops to accomplish a military objective, and have, to some degree, lost control of their political ability to enforce existing conscription law. When conscripted soldiers are sent to foreign wars that do not directly affect the security of the nation, or under pretexts and contexts that are otherwise controversial, conscription has historically been highly politically contentious within democracies. There were a number of conscription crises in history. The Revolt in the Vendee involved an early case of a conscription crisis in 1793 as the revolutionary government sought to conscript portions of local communities for the Revolutionary Wars. It was viewed as a destroyer of the freedom to ethical and political choice granted by the constitution of the United States. 1. Economic conscription

Economic conscription is a term used to describe mechanisms for recruitment of personnel for the armed forces through the use of economic conditions. The term is most commonly used to refer to a situation in which certain geographical areas within a country are neglected in terms of their economic development, leading to a situation where a high proportion of young people consider a career within the armed forces as an attractive career choice the premise is that if these areas enjoyed favourable conditions, this would not be the case, and that governments using this mechanism know this, and choose not to change the situation. Claim and counter claim The term is usually used in a pejorative sense. Users of the term claim that the government could create conditions where joining the armed forces would not be seen as an attractive career choice, but choose not to in order to avoid resourcing problems for their armed forces. Governments in countries at which the charge of using this method is levelled counter that they are providing work for people who would otherwise not have any. Example countries Countries which have been described as practising economic conscription include the United States and the United Kingdom .
