The End of Our Road is a single written by Roger Penzabene , Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong in 1967. Originally recorded by Gladys Knight & the Pips and issued as a single in 1968, the Pips version of the song, which talked about the demise of a couple s relationship, became another top forty hit for the family group as it peaked at number fifteen on the pop singles chart in 1968. Much like the minor controversy with I Heard It Through the Grapevine , Whitfield produced a different version of the song with Marvin Gaye , who issued the song in early 1970. The album was her fifth collaboration with John Cale and third with him as producer. It carried the same harmonium based sound heard on The Marble Index album The Marble Index and Desertshore with the addition of Brian Eno s synthesizers and electronic instruments. The song You Forget To Answer tells of the misery felt when she failed to reach ex lover Jim Morrison by phone only to find out later that he had died. All but two of the songs on the album were written by Nico there is a cover of The Doors The End and a version of the German national anthem Das Lied der Deutschen .
