Wikify date December 2010 Orphan date December 2006 att July 2009 Microsurgical endodontics is that aspect of endodontics which evolved after the introduction of the Surgical Operating Microscope SOM to endodontics in the early 1990s. ref Selbst AG, Curd CM. The surgical operating microscope in endodontics. J Gt Houst Dent Soc 1994 66 10 1. ref The recent addition of SOM s to endodontic therapy can allow better visualization and management of the surgical field by endodontists during endodontic procedures through magnification and greatly improved high intensity lighting. SOM s typically magnify in the 4X to 25X range. The other commonly used magnification aide, through lens eyeglass mounted surgical telescopes, provide 2.5X to 4.5X magnification. Surgical operating microscopes have a steep learning curve and require training, as well as patience and practice to master. Some studies ref Rubinstein RA, Kim S. Long Term Follow Up of Cases Considered Healed One Year After Apical Microsurgery. J Endod 2002 28 378 383. ref have demonstrated higher success rates in surgical procedures using SOM s when compared to direct vision. However, use of the surgical operating microscope routinely for endodontic procedures is not considered the standard of care in endodontics. ref cite web last Guttman first JL url http medind.nic.in eaa t05 i2 eaat05i2p5.pdf title Is Endodontics Becoming So Magnified That It Is Too Narrowly Focused? publisher Endodontology 2005 17 5 6 ref References references External links http www.jedmed.com JEDMED Surgical Operating Microscopes http www.designsforvision.com Designs for Vision Surgical Telescopes Category Endodontics dentistry stub ...   more details

There is often a Prism optics prism that allows splitting of the light beam in order that assistants may also visualize the procedure or to allow photography or video to be taken of the operating field . An example of a procedure which commonly uses an operating microscope would be endodontic retreatment , where the magnification provided by the operating microscope improves visualisation of the anatomy present leading to better outcomes for the patient. Another example might be an anastomosis procedure carried out to join blood vessels in vascular surgery . Typically an operating microscope might cost several thousand dollars for a basic model, more advanced models may be much more expensive. No predilection for race, but females are more likely to get regional odontodysplasia. The tooth enamel enamel , dentin , and pulp tooth pulp of teeth are affected, and on radiograph s the teeth are described as ghost teeth . ref Kahn, Michael A. Basic Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. Volume 1. 2001. ref Most cases are considered idiopathic but some cases are associated with syndromes, growth abnormalities, neural disorders, and vascular malformations. Permanent teeth usually show effects of regional odontodysplasia if the deciduous tooth was affected. Many of these teeth don t erupt with an increased risk for caries and periapical inflammation. Treatment Prognosis is usually based upon keeping these teeth and preserving the alveolus. For erupted teeth, Endodontics is an option if the tooth is devitalized and restorable. For unerupted teeth, function can be restored with a removable partial denture until all major growth has been completed and a final restoration can be placed. ref Neville, Brad et. al.
