  1. Alcohol septal ablation

Alcohol septal ablation ASA, TASH, Sigwart procedure is a percutaneous, minimally invasive treatment performed by an interventional cardiologist to relieve symptoms and improve functional status in severely symptomatic patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy HCM who meet strict clinical, anatomic and physiologic selection criteria. In carefully selected patients, when performed by an experienced interventional cardiologist, the procedure is successful in relieving symptoms in over 90 of patients. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a condition of the heart muscle which grows abnormally thick, in the absence of a physiologic cause such as hypertension high blood pressure or aortic valve disease. In a subset of patients with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy, thickening of the heart muscle in a particular part of the interventricular septum causes obstruction to blood being ejected from the left ventricle . 1. Munnerlyn Formula

wikify date February 2011 Cleanup date January 2010 The Munnerlyn Formula is the theoretical formula ref Munnerlyn, CR, Koons, SJ, Marshall, J. Photorefractive keratecomy a technique for laser refractive surgery, J. Refratc. Surg., 1988, 14, 46 52 ref discovered by Charles Munnerlyn , which gives the depth an excimer laser will need to ablate during LASIK surgery or similar medical interventions. The formula states that the depth of the ablation in micrometres per diopter of refractive change is equal to the square of the diameter of the optical ablation zone measured in millimeters, divided by three. For example, to change refraction by 4 diopters with an optical zone of 3 mm would require ablation of 12 micrometeres. As the depth of ablation is proportional to the square of the opitcal zone, changing the refraction by 4 diopters but with an optical zone of 6 mm would require a much deeper ablation of approximately 48 micrometers. ref Machat, JJ, Fundamental Concepts and Principles of the Excimer Laser and LASIK 1996, from The Art of LASIK, Second Ed., Machat, JJ, Slade, SG, Probst, LE eds, Slack Thorofare, NJ , ISBN 1 55642 386 1, Chapt 3, pg 33 ref . The ablation depth does not include the transition zone of the surgery. The actual ablation depth and surface shape will be slightly different than the theoretical Munnerlyn formula. Many factors must be taken into account at the time of the surgery. The sex, age, and race of the patient, and such things as the barometric pressure and ambient humidity will change slightly the required ablation. The formula was derived based on creating a theoretical lenticular surface in a polymethylmethacrylate PMMA model, and modified by testing on in vivo animal tissue. 1. Tao Brush

The Tao Brush is a medical instrument used to perform an alternative method of endometrial biopsy . The traditional method of endometrial biopsies uses a specialized catheter the Pipelle to suction away a portion of the uterine lining. The Tao Brush method instead uses a small, flexible brush to gently brush the entire inside of the uterus. The Tao Brush is theoretically able to gather a more complete sampling of the uterus lining, removes less tissue, and some reports suggest that it is less painful than the traditional method. Early Detection According to the American Cancer Society , endometrial cancer is the most common cancer of the female reproductive system. In 2007 there will be approximately 39,080 new cases. About 7,400 women in the United States will die of uterine cancer. The vast majority of the cases 70 were diagnosed in women between the ages of 45 and 74, with the highest number between 55 and 64. The proportion of women who will be diagnosed with endometrial cancer is 1 in 40. As with all cancers, those diagnosed at an early stage have a much higher survival rate. The Tao Brush biopsy is able to detect endometrial adenocarcinoma, which accounts for 97 of all endometrial cancers. ref cite journal last1 Yang first1 GCH last2 Wan first2 LS author separator , author name separator year 2000 title Endometrial Biopsy Using the Tao Brush Method url journal Journal of Reproductive Medicine volume 45 issue 2 pages 109 114 pmid 10710740 ref Procedure The procedure for the Tao Brush biopsy is 1.
