  1. Z-tube

File Z tube.svg right thumb 200px Z tube The Z tube is an experimental Tool apparatus for measuring the tensile strength of a liquid . It consists of a Z shaped tube with open ends, filled with a liquid, and set on top of a spinning table. If the tube were straight, the liquid would immediately fly out one end or the other of the tube as it began to spin. By bending the ends of the tube back towards the center of rotation , a shift of the liquid away from center will result in the water level in one end of the tube rising and thus increasing the pressure in that end of the tube, and consequently returning the liquid to the center of the tube. By measuring the rotational speed and the distance from the center of rotation to the liquid level in the bent ends of the tube, the pressure reduction inside the tube can be calculated. 1. Tube riding

Tube riding is a term used by surfer s to describe riding well inside the curve or barrel of a finely shaped breaking wave. Under the right conditions, waves in some areas form a moving tube or cylinder as they break, for example, see the Banzai Pipeline in Hawaii. The most straightforward way to tube ride is by body surfing . Body surfers ride the waves on their stomachs without a board and thus they can relatively easily access the tube, even on a moderately small wave that is barreling. It is also possible to tube ride using a boogie board, a surfboard , and other wave riding tools. However tube riding is an advanced skill, and many surfers spend years and even lifetimes surfing without ever really getting tubed the term used for being inside the barrel of the wave . Unreferenced stub auto yes date December 2009 Orphan date October 2008 A tube caddy was a very large carrying case sometimes with hundreds of compartments for vacuum tube s. They were carried by repair technicians who did home service calls in the days when Receiver radio radios and Television TV sets television sets were too large and heavy for the average homeowner to bring to the repair shop. The tube caddy had to be large enough to hold several of each type of tube likely to be needed on a typical day of service calls so that the technician did not need to return to the shop during his rounds. Because tubes are quite light the caddy did not have to accommodate a large payload and could also be constructed with very light materials so the overall package weighed far less than it appeared to. It usually contains two electron gun s, which can project two thin electron beams at right angles. The beams can be bent by applying voltages to various electrodes in the tube. The electron beams are visible as fine bluish lines. This is accomplished by filling the tube with low pressure helium gas. A few of the electrons in the beam collide with the helium atoms, causing them to fluoresce and emit light. They are usually used to teach electromagnetic effects because they show how an electron beam is affected by electric field s and by magnetic field s. Motions in fields Charged particles in a uniform electric field follow a parabolic trajectory , since the electric field term of the Lorentz force which acts on the particle is the product of the particle s charge and the magnitude of the electric field, oriented in the direction of the electric field . In a uniform magnetic field however, charged particles follow a circular trajectory due to the cross product in the magnetic field term of the Lorentz force. That is, the force from the magnetic field acts on the particle in a direction perpendicular to the particle s direction of motion. See Lorentz force for more details. 1. Ludwieg tube

Image Ludwieg lab.gif 250px thumb Ludwieg Tube installation with a dump tank left , nozzle and test section center and expansion tube right A Ludwieg tube is a cheap and efficient way of producing supersonic flow. Mach numbers up to 4 are easily obtained without any additional heating of the flow. With heating, Mach numbers of up to 11 can be reached. Principle A Ludwieg tube is a wind tunnel that produces supersonic flow for short periods of time. A large evacuated dump tank is separated from the downstream end of a convergent divergent nozzle by a diaphragm or fast acting valve. The upstream end of the nozzle connects to a long cylindrical tube, whose cross sectional area is significantly larger than the throat area of the nozzle. Initially, the pressure in the nozzle and tube is high. To start the tunnel, the diaphragm is ruptured, e.g., by piercing it with a suitable cutting device, or opening the valve respectively. As always when a diaphragm ruptures, a shock wave propagates into the low pressure region here the dump tank and an expansion wave propagates into the high pressure region here the nozzle and the long tube . As this unsteady expansion propagates through the long tube, it sets up a steady Speed of sound subsonic flow toward the nozzle, which is accelerated by the convergent divergent nozzle to a supersonic condition. The flow is steady until the expansion, having been reflected from the far end of the tube, arrives at the nozzle again. For practical reasons, flow times are about 100 milliseconds for most Ludwieg tubes ref http ludwieg.caltech.edu PHF.pdf Experiments ...
