Tordino is a river flowing in the province of Teramo , in the Abruzzo region of Italy . In Ancient Rome Roman times it was known as Batinus . The source of the Tordino is located between Mount Gorzano and Pelone. After a course of 58 kilometers, it flows into the Adriatic Sea . The river initially flows in a torrent to the east through the Gran Sasso National Park , then directs to the north around Mount Bilanciere before finally flowing in a south easterly direction. Near its source, the Tordino forms the Fiumata cascades and, a bit further along, the Tordino cascades. It then passes through Padula Cortino Padula and Caiano, frazione frazioni of the comune of Cortino . Watermills and olive oil presses are located in the higher elevations. The town of Teramo is located at the junction where the Tordino meets the Vezzola river. The mouth of the rivers is in the town of Giulianova . The Tordino river basin covers an area of approximately 453 square kilometers 175  mi . Tributaries on the left bank of the Tordino include the protective irrigation drain known as the Cavata including three terraces and their associated cascades near the source of the Tordino , the Rivettino, the Castiglione, the Rivoletto, the Rio Verde, the large ditch known as The Inferno, the 9 kilometer 6  mi long Fiumicino stream, and the Vezzola river. A large portion of the water of the Vezzola which begins near the town of Rocca Santa Maria , has a length of 19 kilometers 12  mi , and passes through the Torricella Sicura community is used by the ENEL Ente Nazionale per l Energia Elettrica utility company to produce electricity. Cleanup date April 2009 The Proprietors of Locks and Canals on the Merrimack River is a limited liability corporation founded on June 27, 1792 ref http www.middlesexcanal.org towpath towpathtopicsNov1967.htm ref , making it one of the oldest corporations in the United States . The company was founded for the purpose of constructing a transportation canal around the Pawtucket Falls Massachusetts Pawtucket Falls on the Merrimack River in what is today Lowell, Massachusetts . Over a mile long with four lock chambers, the canal was finished in 1796. Although the canal allowed for lumber and other goods to be transmitted from New Hampshire to the shipyards of Newburyport, Massachusetts Newburyport , the competing Middlesex Canal , a direct route to Boston, Massachusetts Boston , opened just ten years later, ruining the Pawtucket s business. In 1821, The Boston Manufacturing Company of Waltham, Massachusetts , purchased the charter of the Proprietors of Locks and Canals, incorporated it into the new Merrimack Manufacturing Company , and widened and deepened the Pawtucket Canal. This allowed them to use it for hydropower purposes. In 1825, the canal company was reorganized again and separated from the Merrimack Manufacturing Company, under the leadership of Kirk Boott . This allowed the city of Lowell to grow quickly, as many other manufacturing corporations were founded in Lowell to take advantage of the waterpower sold by the Proprietors of Locks and Canals. In the mid 19th century, the company was under the leadership of James B. Francis , inventor of the Francis Turbine , after he took over when George Washington Whistler left to work on Russia s railway system ref http library.uml.edu clh Locks.Html ref .
