  1. Plastic Igniter Cord

Orphan date February 2009 Unreferenced date August 2008 A plastic igniter cord PIC is a type of fuse used to initiate an explosive device or charge. In appearance igniter cord is similar to safety fuse and when ignited, an intense flame spits perpendicular to the cord at a uniform rate as it burns along its length. Igniter cord in construction is again similar to safety fuse, consisting of a pyrotechnic composition at the core, wrapped with a nylon sheath to provide shape and finally wrapped again in an outer plastic shell to provide water resistance. Normally, igniter cord also consists of a metal wire at the very center of the pyrotechnic core which also runs the entire length of the cord the pyrotechnic composition will react with the metal wire typically aluminum, iron or copper to increase the energetics of the fuse. There are two types of PICs the fast type which has nominal burning speed of 30 cm per second, a diameter of about 3 mm, and is brownish in color and the slow type, which has a diameter of 2 mm, is greenish in color, and has a nominal burning speed of 3 cm per second. 1. Near-equilibrium enzymatic flux transfer networks

Orphan date February 2009 No footnotes date April 2009 Near equilibrium enzymatic flux transfer networks are intra cellular mechanisms for moving Adenosine triphosphate ATP and a wide range of other metabolite s around the cell biology cell from where they are produced to where they are needed, at a rate faster than simple diffusion through the cell s cytoplasm would be able to manage. They can act as a buffer system, as there are linear arrays of pathways with several intermediates in the chain, making the supply of metabolites more reliable. A set of parallel shuttles is also less sensitive to disruption than a single shuttle would be. This allows for automatic coupling between supply and demand, and they can almost instantly supply of a ligand to parts of cells that require it. Hence the concentrations of enzymes in the cell is very large, instead of the concentration of metabolites solutes in the cell being large, which helps osmosis osmotic homeostasis , and means transport of metabolites is not dependent on wastefully large concentration gradient s. This means that they are less costly in terms of energy used. 1. Automatic Digital Computer M-1

Orphan date April 2009 The project to build the Automatic Computer M 1 was completed in December 1951 at the Energetics Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences . In charge of the Laboratory of Electrosystems was I.S. Brouk , who obtained the first domestic patent with the title Digital Computer with Common Bus in 1948. Work to build the computer based on Brouk s design began in 1950. Parts were very difficult to get due to Aftermath of World War II postwar rationing . On the other hand, due to availability of Copper I oxide copper oxide diodes which were brought as trophies from Germany , the machine had the lowest lamp count of contemporary designs, at 730. The memory was based on an original invention of an electrostatic memory using the ordinary oscilloscope cathod ray tube . Each tube was capable of holding 32 words, 25 bit each. The computer had 8 such tubes for a total fast memory of 256 machine words. ref http www.computer museum.ru english m1.htm ref Russian ref http www.computer museum.ru histussr m1.htm ref The computer turned out to work rather reliably and was immediately put to practical use, for numerical calculations in nuclear physics . Biography Born in Nagyv rad , Heller took a degree in mechanical engineering in 1931 at the ETH Zurich Eidgen ssische Technische Hochschule in Z rich . In the 1940s the first high pressure industrial power station was built according to his plans. It was around this time that he invented the Heller Forg system. In 1951 he was awarded the Kossuth Prize . He organized the Department of Energetics at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics , where he worked as a professor. He was a large contributor to the domain of statics , and helped establish the concept of entropy for engineering practices. In 1962 he became a full member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences . Heller s nephew graduated from University of Southern California USC , obtaining a degree in Mechanical engineering. The Heller Forg System, or Indirect Dry Cooling System The system is named after Heller and Forg L szl , the active collaborator in the industrial implementation of the system. The Heller Forg system solved an important problem at power stations by utilizing cooling water more efficiently. The main point of their invention was to condense the vacuum steam using an injection of cool water. The still warm water enters into the fine gilled heat exchanger , cools down and becomes usable again for when the cycle is repeated. The system is known and used all over the world. 1. Brood patch

image Riparia riparia Brutfleck.jpg thumb 250px Brood patch of Sand Martin A brood patch is a patch of featherless skin that is visible on the underside of bird s during the nesting season . This patch of skin is well supplied with blood vessels at the surface making it possible for the birds to transfer heat to their eggs when incubating. In most species the feathers in the region are shed automatically but ducks and geese may pluck the feathers and use them to line the nest. The feathers of the region regrow soon after the eggs hatch in the case of precocial birds but may be delayed in those birds having altricial young. The positions of brood patches can vary with many having a single brood patch in the middle of the belly while some shorebirds have one patch on each side of the belly. Gulls and galliformes may have three brood patches. Pelicans, boobies and gannets do not develop brood patches, but instead cradle the eggs on their feet when incubating.
