Written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards , Slave was originally written and recorded for 1976 s Black and Blue . Initial recordings took place in Rotterdam , Netherlands , using the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio . During that time, the Rolling Stones were faced with the unexpected position of filling the recently vacated position of second guitarist, after the abrupt departure of Mick Taylor . Jeff Beck , a prospective replacement recorded on guitar, and Nicky Hopkins provided piano. However these were both erased from the final take in June 1981, with only Billy Preston s organ lasting through. Fact date April 2009 The Who s Pete Townshend provided backing vocals for the recording and one of saxophonist Sonny Rollins three performances on tracks for the album appeared as well. Called ...a standard Stones blues jam in the album review by Rolling Stone , Slave was the result of the Stones experiments with funk and dance music during the Black and Blue recording sessions of 1974 75. The lyrics are sparse outside of a brief spoken verse by Jagger and the refrain of Don t want to be your slave . Richards eventually provided guitars for the song, with Charlie Watts and Bill Wyman supporting on drums and bass, respectively. The Virgin Records reissue of Slave contains an additional 90 seconds of the song. It was never performed by the Stones on stage and appears on no compilation albums. Slave Raider was an American heavy metal music heavy metal band formed in 1985 that was known for its over the top antics, heavy make up and glam rock glam song lyrics. In the 1980s, the Minneapolis music scene was primarily known for The Replacements band The Replacements , Soul Asylum , H sker D and Prince musician Prince among others. In the Twin Cities, Slave Raider had a sizeable following that were known as The Raid . They opened for such 80s bands as Ratt and Poison with the original line up. The band recorded three albums in the late 1980s and early 1990s, but were never able to make much of a dent in the glam metal scene of the time due to the beginning of the grunge movement that interestingly, has been attributed to the influence of their fellow Minnesotans, The Replacements. The band was dropped by its record label following their third album release in 1990 and broke up soon after that with the band members going on to solo projects. Image Dying slave Louvre MR 1590.jpg thumb Dying Slave The Dying Slave is a sculpture by the Italian Renaissance artist Michelangelo . Created between 1513 and 1516, it was to serve with another figure, the Rebellious Slave , at the tomb of Pope Julius II . ref Panofsky, Erwin. The First Two Projects of Michelangelo s Tomb of Julius II . The Art Bulletin , Volume 19, No. 4, December 1937. pp. 561 579. ref It is a marble figure 2.28 metres 7 6 in height, and is held at the Mus e du Louvre Louvre , Paris. The man s left wrist is strapped to the back of the neck, and there is a band around his chest. A monkey, only partially carved, grasps his left shin, representing either art as mere aping mimesis or suggesting earthly passions. The artist and work were influenced by the late BC Rhodian sculpture Laoco n and His Sons . In 1976 the art historian Richard Fly wrote that it suggests that moment when life capitulates before the relentless force of dead matter . ref Fly, Richard. Shakespeare s Mediated World .
