The bomb was tested during the Harry S. Truman Truman administration as part of Operation Ivy . This series of tests involved the development of very powerful nuclear weapons in response to the nuclear weapons program of the Soviet Union . The production of Ivy King was hurried so it would be ready if its sister project, Ivy Mike , failed in its attempt to achieve a Nuclear fusion thermonuclear reaction . The Ivy King test actually took place two weeks after Mike. Unlike the Mike bomb, the Ivy King device could theoretically have been added to United States nuclear arsenal because it was designed to be air deliverable. On November 16, 1952 at 11 30 local time 23 30 GMT a Convair B 36 B 36H bomber dropped the bomb over a point 2,000 feet 610 m north of Runit Island in the Enewetak atoll, resulting in a 500 TNT equivalent kiloton explosion at 1,480 feet 450 m . The Ivy King bomb, designated as a Mark 18 nuclear bomb Mk 18 bomb and named the Super Oralloy Bomb , was a modified version of the Mark 6 nuclear bomb Mk 6D bomb . Instead of using an Nuclear weapon design Implosion type weapon implosion system similar to the Mk 6D, it used a 92 point implosion system initially developed for the Mk 13. File Enewetak or Eniwetok atoll.jpg thumb Aerial view of the American airstrip on Enewetak atoll, a quintessential unsinkable aircraft carrier . An unsinkable aircraft carrier is a term sometimes used to refer to a geographical or political island that is utilized to extend the power projection of a military force. Because such an entity is capable of acting as an airbase and is a physical landmass not easily destroyed, it is, in effect, an aircraft carrier that cannot be sunk. The term unsinkable aircraft carrier first arose during World War II , to describe the islands and atoll s in the Pacific Ocean which became strategically important as potential airstrips for United States American bomber s in their transoceanic war against Japan . To this end, the U.S. military engaged in numerous Leapfrogging strategy island hopping operations to oust the occupying Japanese forces from such islands afterwards the U.S. Navy Seabee s would often have to construct airstrips there from scratch sometimes over entire atolls quickly, in order to support the air operations against Japan. Siege of Malta World War II Malta was sometimes described as an unsinkable aircraft carrier during World War II . The US military are said to have considered Taiwan since the Chinese Civil War , and the British Isles and Japan during the Cold War as unsinkable aircraft carriers. ref cite news author Richard Blystone title Europe learning lessons of Greenham Common url http web.archive.org web 20080726014316 http edition.cnn.com SPECIALS cold.war episodes 19 then.now publisher CNN accessdate 2007 12 18 ref ref cite news title AN UNSINKABLE AIRCRAFT CARRIER url http www.time.com time magazine article 0,9171,856644,00.html work Time date 1950 09 04 accessdate 2007 12 18 ref In 1983, Japan Japanese Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone pledged to make Japan an unsinkable aircraft carrier in the Pacific Ocean Pacific , assisting the U.S. in defending against the threat of Soviet Union Soviet bombers. ref cite ... more details
