    The University of the Visual & Performing Arts lang ta , is the only university of visual art s in Sri Lanka . Established in July 2005, its campus is situated in Colombo . History The precursor of the University of the Visual and Performing Arts was the Ceylon Technical College , established in 1893. Its Department of Arts and Aesthetics moved from Horton Place to Haywood College on 1 October 1949. The institution was renamed School of Art and awarded a diploma in Fine Arts after its six year course. On 2 July 1952, the institution was again renamed as the Government College of Fine Arts and began instruction in singing and acting. The departments of Music and Dance were started in Colombo, and the school was renamed the College of Fine Arts . After the First University Act of 1972, the College of Fine Arts become the Institute of Aesthetic Studies of the University of Ceylon in 1974. In 1978, 63 students received the Bachelor of Arts degree. The restructuring of the university system in Sri Lanka affiliated of the institute to the University of Kelaniya in 1980. A Special Gazette Notice formally announced the creation of the University of the Visual and Performing Arts on 1 July 2005. Sarath Amunugama was assigned as First Vice Chancellor. It is an element of two dimensional and three dimensional design and is distinguished by its perceived visual and physical properties. Use of texture , along with other elements of design, can convey a variety of messages and emotions. 2D Texture Physical Physical texture , also known as actual texture or tactile texture , are the actual variations upon a surface. This can include, but is not limited to, fur, wood grain, sand, smooth surface of canvas or metal, glass, and leather. The LVAC is internationally recognized for the 4 6 exhibitions it presents each year in its convert 6000 sqft m2 adj on galleries. The LVAC organized Fred Wilson artist Fred Wilson s installation for the US Pavilion at the 2003 Venice Biennale . The LVAC is housed in the Wiesner building , an I.M. Pei designed, fully accessible facility that incorporates the work of painter Kenneth Noland , sculptor Scott Burton , and environmental sculptor Richard Fleischner , commissioned through MIT s Percent for Art program. The Percent for Art program, administered by the LVAC, allocates funds for the commission of art in connection with each new campus construction or major renovation project. Past commissions include Louise Nevelson s Transparent Horizon in front of the Landau Building, Sol LeWitt s polychrome floor in the Green Center for Physics, and Anish Kapoor s untitled stainless steel piece in the Stata Center. The LVAC maintains a permanent collection primarily sited throughout campus of over 3,000 prints, photographs, drawings, paintings, sculptures, textiles, collages, and other objects of contemporary art. The Gallery Since 1991, DVAC s gallery in downtown Dayton presents a full schedule of contemporary art exhibitions each year that are free to the public.
