  1. Of Reformation

Of Reformation is a 1641 pamphlet by John Milton , and his debut in the public arena. Its full title is Of Reformation of Church Discipline in England . Background This work was followed by four others, also related to church hierarchy and Presbyterianism . Christopher Hill historian Christopher Hill considers that Milton was somewhat influenced, in the series, by the style of the pamphleteer Martin Marprelate , back in print and notes that the timing in May 1641 was in the same month as the execution of Thomas Wentworth, 1st Earl of Strafford , and the fall of William Laud , Archbishop of Canterbury . Further, Hill points out Milton s special interest in the cultural and moral consequences, as he saw them, of episcopacy . ref Hill 1977 p. 81 ref The work was Milton s first independently produced work, and was published in May 1641 under the title Of Reformation Touching Church Discipline in England And the Cavses that hitherto have hindred it . 1. Second Reformation

The term Second Reformation has been used in a number of contexts in Protestantism , and continues to be used by some to refer to contemporary events. 1. Reformation of Manners

Multiple issues context August 2011 orphan August 2011 wikify August 2011 The Reformation of Manners was an ideological drive to bring religious discipline to English parishes in the early modern period. Following the sixteenth century religious reformation in parts of England, Calvinism heavily influenced the governance of many parishes. These parishes were governed by a series of local presbyteries, a group of church elders that saw their duty in the regulation of morals in accordance with scriptural principles. ref C. Durston and J. Eales eds. , The Culture of English Puritanism, 1560 1700 Basingstoke, London, 1996 ref Calvinist theology encouraged a dualistic language of social description, particularly a distinction between the godly and the reprobate of the parish. As such, it was thought that the better sort of inhabitant should be responsible for policing and disciplining the behaviour of their vulgar neighbours. ref S. Hindle, The State and Social Change in Early Modern England Basingstoke and New York, 2002 ref In practice, the word of God was brought to bear on communities through pastoral supervision, an enforced focus on scriptural education see Free Grammar School , attempts to increase literacy, mandatory repetition of catechisms and the suppression of many popular pastimes, including parish wakes, seasonal festivities, drinking and bear baiting. ref S. Hindle, Custom, Festival and Protest in Early Modern England The Little Budworth Wakes, St Peter s Day, 1596 Rural History , 1995 , 6 155 178. ref This impulse is perhaps best exemplified in Richard Baxter s ministry over Kidderminster in Worcestershire between 1641 and 1660. Baxter, often referred to as the saint of the Puritans , had an exalted view of his ministerial office and pastoral duties, striving to bring moral discipline to his parishioners. Baxter s ministry is an extreme example but the Reformation of Manners was also manifested as a wider initiative in the church courts throughout England ...   more details
