cleanup date January 2010 EnglishCountry Music is a term that gained currency in the 1960s and early 70s to specifically describe a genre of instrumental music then receiving attention from the folk revival . Countryhouse opera is opera performed at a countryhouse , whether in the house itself, in the grounds, or in an adapted or purpose built theatre in the grounds. It is a feature in particular of the England English summer. Countryhouse opera is usually initiated by private enthusiasts, and relies on private funding. This distinguishes it from the UK s state subsidised opera companies which, like most opera houses around the world, are based in city centres. Black tie is often de rigueur, in contrast with Royal Opera House Covent Garden and other city operas where casual clothing is often acceptable. The performances of countryhouse opera are generally planned to provide a leisurely and elegant experience, with time for picnics on the lawns or a full meal in the interval, and often start in the late afternoon. The English have always liked picnicking in the summer and if you can throw in a bit of entertainment, then that s even better said a former manager at the Sydney Opera House, attributing the popularity of countryhouse opera in England to the wonderful adventurous spirit of the British.... The CountryHouse Revealed is a six part BBC series first aired on BBC Two in May 2011 in which United Kingdom British architectural historian Dan Cruickshank visits six houses never before open to public view, and examines the lives of the families who lived there. Episodes Episode 1 tells the story behind South Wraxall Manor , hidden in the depths of the Wiltshire countryside. Built by a family with a dramatic and chequered history Robert Long politician the Longs who rose in prominence through the Tudor period to become knights of the realm, friends of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I , and one of the most powerful dynasties in England. Episode 2 tells the story of architect Sir William Bruce and Kinross House . Episode 3 examines the architecture of Easton Neston in Northamptonshire and discusses whether it was the work of Nicholas Hawksmoor or Sir Christopher Wren . Episode 4 shows Wentworth Woodhouse near Rotherham , one of the largest country houses in Europe. The building exemplifies the workings of British Parliamentary democracy before the Reform Act of 1832, and is important in the history of Whig British political party Whig politics, its owners having included influential Prime Minister Charles Watson Wentworth, 2nd Marquess of Rockingham . The episode also relates the near destruction of the estate by controversial open cast coal mining in the 1940s and 1950s, and speculates on how such a huge countryhouse needing extensive renovation might find a use in the 21st century. The Royal CountryHouse in Potsdam is situated on mount Kapellenberg and was originally constructed for the sexton of the Russian Orthodox chapel of Saint Alexander Nevsky nearby. The fa ade of the log house recalls simple German and Russian farm constructions. It was actually used as a royal residence. On the second floor, King Frederik William III would give tea parties, sometimes gathering up to 40 persons. Interior furnishings of the royal rooms affected extreme simplicity. Only a samovar from Tula, Russia Tula and table and tea services produced by the Berlin royal porcelain manufactory specified the high position of the dweller. A porcelain service, gift of the Russian emperor Nicholas I of Russia Nicholas I , was decorated with painted gold on a malachite background, and scenes of rural life. Since Frederik William s time there has been a tiny monument to Tsar Alexander I , one meter in height.
