RA 1 EnricoFermi is a research reactor in Argentina and the first nuclear reactor to be built in that country. Construction started April 1957, with first criticality 17 January 1958. It produced the first medical and industrial radioisotope s made in Argentina, and was used to train staff for the first two nuclear power stations there. It is a pool type, with enriched uranium oxide fuel 20 U 235 , light water coolant and moderator, and a graphite reflector. It produces 40 kilowatts of thermal energy at full authorised power. It has been modernised on several occasions, and is currently used for research and teaching. Fermi holes give rise ...Textbook date July 2008 The idea of a Fermi hole requires some background in the idea of anti symmetrized wavefunctions. The Pauli exclusion principle is the rule that no more than two electrons can be in the same orbital. The rule traces to a deep algebraic property of nature that has nothing whatsoever to do with the charge on electrons. The essence is that many electron Wavefunction wave function s must change sign when the labels on any two electrons are interchanged. This property is called antisymmetry physics antisymmetry , and its essential consequence is that electrons either stay out of one another s way, forming what is called a EnricoFermiFermi hole, or clump together, forming what is called a EnricoFermiFermi heap. A Fermi resonance is the shifting of the energies and intensities of absorption bands in an infrared spectrum infrared or Raman spectroscopy Raman spectrum . It is a consequence of quantum mechanical mixing. ref Kazuo Nakamoto Infrared and Raman Spectra of Inorganic and Coordination Compounds Theory and Applications in Inorganic Chemistry Volume A John Wiley, 1997. ISBN 0 471 16394 5 ref The phenomenon was explained by the Italian physicist EnricoFermi . Selection rules and occurrence Two conditions must be satisfied for the occurrence of Fermi Resonance the two molecular vibration vibrational state s of a molecule transform according to the same irreducible Group representation representation of the molecular point group . In other words the two vibrations must have the same symmetries Mulliken symbols . The transitions accidentally have almost the same energy. Fermi resonance most often occurs between normal and overtone modes, if they are nearly coincident in energy. Fermi resonance leads to two effects. First, the high energy mode shifts to high energy and the low energy mode shifts to still lower energy. Second, the weaker mode gains intensity becomes more allowed and the more intense band decreases in intensity. The two transitions are describable as a linear combination of the parent modes. Fermi resonance does not really lead to additional bands in the spectrum. Free electron Fermi surfaces are spheres of radius math k F frac sqrt 2 m E F hbar math ... . A material whose Fermi level falls in a gap between bands is an Electrical insulation insulator or semiconductor depending on the size of the bandgap . When a material s Fermi level falls in a bandgap, there is no Fermi surface. Image graphiteFS.png thumb A view of the graphite Fermi surface at the corner .... Materials with complex crystal structures can have quite intricate Fermi surfaces. The figure illustrates the anisotropic Fermi surface of graphite, which has both electron and hole pockets in its Fermi surface due to multiple bands crossing the Fermi energy along the math vec k z math direction. Often in a metal the Fermi surface radius math k F math is larger than the size of the first Brillouin zone which results in a portion of the Fermi surface lying in the second or higher zones. As with the band structure itself, the Fermi surface can be displayed in an extended zone scheme where ... math vec K math .
