refimprove date February 2007 Image AutoinjectorMarkI.jpg right thumb 250px A variety of autoinjectors in use with the Military of the United States US Armed Forces An autoinjector or auto injector is a medical device designed to deliver a single Dose biochemistry dose of a particular typically life saving medication drug . Most autoinjectors are spring loaded syringe s. By design, autoinjectors are easy to use and are intended for self administration by patients, or administration by untrained personnel. The site of injection depends on the drug loaded, but it typically is administered into the thigh or the buttocks . The injectors were initially designed to overcome the hesitation associated with self administration of the needle based drug delivery device . Design The autoinjector keeps the needle tip shielded prior to injection and also has a passive safety mechanism to prevent accidental firing injection . Injection depth can be adjustable or fixed and a function for needle shield removal may be incorporated. Just by pressing a button, the syringe hypodermic needle needle is automatically inserted and the drug is delivered. Once the injection is completed some auto injectors have visual indication to confirm that the full dose has been delivered. Autoinjectors contain glass syringes, this can make them fragile and contamination can occur. More recently, companies http www.ovalmedical.com have been looking into making autoinjectors syringes out of plastic to prevent this issue. Examples Anapen, EpiPen s, or the recently introduced Twinject , which is often prescribed to people who are at risk for anaphylaxis . Wikify date January 2011 Refimprove date August 2007 The son of a prominent surgeon and trained in surgery himself, Stanley Sarnoff produced over 200 papers and 60 patents during the course of his long career. His work included the development of such widely used devices as the auto injector , which was a precursor to the EpiPen , and the 24 hour cardiac monitor. In addition to his own work, he was devoted to philanthropy and, though the creation of The Stanley J Sarnoff Endowment for Cardiovascular Science, he has helped to inspire medical students and cardiology fellows from around the country to pursue cardiovascular research. Early life Stanley Sarnoff received his undergraduate degree from Princeton University 1938 and his medical degree form Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine 1942 . Although he was interested in research as a medical student, Sarnoff was strongly encouraged to become a cardiac surgeon by his father, Jacob Sarnoff, who was a prominent surgeon of the time. However, it was while Sarnoff was assisting his father in the operating room that he made observations which challenged conventional thoughts on cardiac physiology. The observations he made on that day would become the foundation of his bench research and revolutionize the way cardiology was practiced. His observations were so revolutionary that they infuriate his father to which Stanley, displaying the belief in scientific observation that would take him so far, would reply , Dad, I know what I saw. After his residency, Sarnoff completed post graduate training at Bellevue Hospital New York , Beth Israel Hospital Boston , Mount Sinai Hospital New York , and Harvard Medical School. The Academic After his training, Sarnoff spent a dozen years at the Harvard University School of Public Health 1948 1960 as an Assistant Professor of Physiology and he become Chief of the Laboratory of Cardiovascular Physiology at the National Heart Institute 1954 . It would be here, at the NIH, that Sarnoff ... more details
