File Zagros 1992.jpg thumb 300px Zagros mountain range, seen from space. Fold mountains are mountain s formed mainly by the effects of fold geology folding on layers within the upper part of the Earth s crust . In the time before either plate tectonic theory developed, or the internal architecture of Fold and thrust belt thrust belts became well understood, the term was used for most mountain belts, such as the Himalayas . The term is still fairly common in physical geography literature but has otherwise generally fallen out of use except as described below. The forces responsible for formation of the fold mountains are called orogenic movements. The term orogenic has derived from a Greek word meaning mountain building. These forces act at tangent to the surface of the earth and are primarily a result of plate tectonics. Formation Fold mountains are formed when two tectonic plates move together a convergent plate boundary . Fold mountains are usually formed from sedimentary rocks which accumulated along the margins of continents. When plates and the continents riding on them collide, the accumulated layers of rock may crumple and fold like a tablecloth that is pushed across a table, particularly if there is a mechanically weak basal layer such as halite salt . ref name Ulmer Examples The Jura mountains A series of sub parallel mountainous ridges formed by folding over a Triassic evaporite decollement due to thrust movements in the foreland of the Alps . Image Rossmann fold 1g5q.png thumb 300px An example of the Rossmann fold, a structural domain of a decarboxylase protein from the bacterium Staphylococcus epidermidis PDB ID 1G5Q with the bound flavin mononucleotide cofactor shown. The Rossmann fold is a protein structural motif found in proteins that bind nucleotide s, especially the cofactor biochemistry cofactor Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide NAD . The structure with two repeats is composed of six parallel beta sheet beta strands linked to two pairs of alpha helix alpha helices in the topological order beta alpha beta alpha beta. Because each Rossmann fold can bind one nucleotide, binding domains for dinucleotides such as NAD consist of two paired Rossmann folds that each bind one nucleotide moiety of the cofactor molecule. Single Rossmann folds can bind mononucleotides such as the cofactor flavin mononucleotide FMN . The motif is named for Michael Rossmann , who first pointed out that this is a frequently occurring motif in nucleotide binding proteins, such as dehydrogenases. ref cite journal author Rao S, Rossmann M title Comparison of super secondary structures in proteins journal J Mol Biol volume 76 issue 2 pages 241 56 year 1973 pmid 4737475 doi 10.1016 0022 2836 73 90388 4 ref References references Protein tertiary structure DEFAULTSORT Rossmann Fold Category Protein folds Category Protein structural motifs protein stub de Rossmann Faltung es Plegamiento de Rossmann ... more details

These are a number of villages in the Weald of Surrey and Sussex , whose suffix of fold indicates a common origin as Anglo Saxons Saxon settlements in cleared areas of woodland. Such settlements were established on the better drained soils of the Weald, the word fold being derived from the Old English falod meaning a staked off pasture area. This indicates that the settlers were probably herders of domesticated animals such as sheep, cattle and pigs rather than arable farmers. ref The Agrarian History of England and Wales edited by Stuart Piggott, H. It was invented by Japan ese astrophysics astrophysicist Koryo Miura . It is an example of the practical importance of rigid origami , or treating hinges and rigid surfaces like the paper and creases in paper folding problems. A folded Miura fold can be packed into a very compact area, its thickness restricted only by the thickness of the folded material. The fold can also be unpacked in just one motion by pulling on opposite ends of the folded material, and likewise folded again by pushing the two ends back together. This was beneficial to the aforementioned solar array as it reduced the number of Electric motor motor s required to unfold it, reducing the overall weight and complexity of the mechanism. Fold forming is a technique of metalworking whereby metal is folded, repeatedly forged and Annealing metallurgy annealed , and unfolded at which stage it generally has a dramatic new three dimensional form. The technique was invented in the late 1980s by Charles Lewton Brain , an English born goldsmith who lived and studied in Tanzania , the United States , and Germany before moving to Canada . Outside of the Industrial Revolution , the method represents the first major innovation in metalworking in thousands of years. ref Revere, Alan. http www.professionaljeweler.com archives articles 1998 jun98 0698pm.html THE INNOVATORS, PART IV Charles Lewton Brain Goldsmith, Inventor, Teacher, Author, Publisher, Web Master Professional Jeweller Magazine, June 1998, accessed 16 July 2006. ref It can best be described as a combination of origami and traditional metalworking. By 1991, Lewton Brain was winning awards for the technique and in 1997 workshops demonstrating the technique were at the core of the Touch the Future portion of the JCK International Jewelry Show in Orlando, Florida. Hundreds of folds have now been categorized, and techniques now include use of traditional forging tools, rolling mill s, and embedding wire and other objects into the folds. ref McCreight, Tim, ed.
